Been looking around for emergency storage food. Looking at the Wise W foods and Mountain House foods, not sure what to get. Just wondering if you guys have tried them or recommend something different. Storing for 3 people to last 30 days, 2 males and 1 female. Prefer hearty meals, I know what MREs are like but Im feeding civilians not grunts.

Emergency storage food?

minor thread jack
How much room do you have for storage? I don't store much dehydrated food, just a couple days worth. Currently I am concentrating on canned food and food staples ie: flour, sugar, beans, rice, etc. I plan on bugging in, so transport hopefully won't be an issue."Stupid should hurt" - Armstrong and Getty show

These are element resistant, nice for the car:

I may be in the minority but I'm a big fan of just buying more of what you would normally have as part of your diet. It's way cheaper and the last thing you want to do is change your diet under stressful conditions ( think mud butt! ).
So you go to the store and you see baked beans, corn, and apple sauce on sale. Normally you would buy one or two cans, you buy eight. You do this every week for three months and you'll have a decent emergency pantry.Comment

Hunkering down, so a month supply for 3 adults. Storage not a huge issue, live in a 4 bedroom home with a garage and shed.sigpicComment

When I go to the store I pick up extra of the following:
-Baked Beans
-Tuna
-Peanut Butter
-Peaches
It's all things my family routinely eats and uses but a slow stockpile is being built up as well.Originally posted by shakes88I went to drop one duece and I come back to pedo-spiderman, dead cats and ***** ******* tattoos... I love this threadComment

I buy honeyville. We buy what we eat. We are cycling through some of the stuff now. Tastes great and saves us money buying in bulk 25-50lb bags.Comment

Whenever we take trips to Target or the market I take a look at the can goods and dry goods to check the expiration dates of said product. Much of that stuff is good for nearly 2yrs and is the stuff we normally eat. Vegetables, dried pastas, ramman noodles(I think those will outlast the cockroaches!) Always look for the product farthest back on the shelf since normally that was stocked most recently and the stuff at the front is older with less shelf life..even a few months difference to me..well..makes a difference. Even found a case of Chef Boyardee various pastas ready to heat and eat in the can with the pull-top lid..doesn't expire until Dec. '13. I think that for those especially with kids..buy extra of what you normally eat. After a major incident (earthquake, etc) is not the time to try experimenting with foods you know in the first place a 4yr old will like. Peanut butter and crackers go along way with kids. And the shelf life is pretty long. My .02

I keep both long term stores 5-15 year shelf life and short term 1-2 year. Long term I went with Honeyville after I seen PC mention it about 4 months back. I live quite a distance from major cities so it helps that they ship your order no matter the size for $4.49. In addition I do the buy stuff at great deals thing when at the market. Canned beans, rice, pasta, andything really that's sensible and a great deal.Last edited by REPR; 02-11-2012, 6:32 AM.Comment

Ever consider Heater Meals? The closest thing I could compare them to is an MRE, though they don't carry the alleged reputation of bowel movement issues to follow. If you are looking for something simple to augment what you already have, it may help.Originally posted by John StarkLive free or die. Death is not the worst of evils.Comment

I chose to prep with what I eat more than "prep" foods. Lots of soups (cans and bags), some rice, and some packaged meals. I have a garden but it wouldn't provide for us for a year, but I'm adding some tree materials this year and already had two orange trees; will add a peach and pear tree this year. The garden/trees thing is important to me as I want to prep up enough food in the house to last until I could grow food continually. That is for bugging in.Comment

Try Costco.com and type emergency in the search area. There you will find everthing you need, free shipping also. I haven't personally tasted the food, but the price and amounts are good, and it has gotten great reviews. Also grab a couple of cases of MRE's for quick food. The other food will be more for long term. Good luck and I hope this helps!Comment
