    Pie Iron = campfire deliciousness

Reading Problemchild's threads about yummy dutch oven recipes made me want to share something that I have found that not everybody knows about: pie irons! http://www.romeindustries.com/pieirons.htm

They're great for cooking up a single serving of sandwiches, English muffins, or my favorite, pies! It's basically two cast iron shells that fold together. Open it up, spread butter on the insides, put in your pie crust or bread or whatever, add your ingredients, close it up and stick it in the fire. When you pull it out, your sandwich or pie is amazing gooey yumminess. I love dutch oven cooking, but pie irons are just so easy to use that I find myself leaving my dutch oven at home more often, unless I'm going camping with a larger group.

Some of my favorite dessert recipes:
    • Cherry pie filling and either pie crust or white bread. Maybe throw in a marshmallow too.
    • S'mores! White bread, crumbled up graham cracker, chocolate, and marshmallows.
    • Brie cheese and cranberry or cranberry/orange relish inside pie crust

There's tons of other pie iron recipes available on the Web.

The downside is you can only cook one pie or whatever at a time, but hey they're cheap and easy to transport; buy two! I highly recommend the cast iron versions; Teflon is not ideal in pie irons because you can very easily overheat it to the point where the Teflon starts to give off fumes.

I remember using these as a kid! Cheap white bread and canned apple pie filling, cooking it in the campfire ... good memories.

We had those. Called them flying saucer makers. A couple pieces of bread, some tomato paste, chesse, olives, etc and you have a pizza pocket. Or, some chili, onions and cheese.

        You name it.

Man, not easy to find in my neck of the woods.
Looks like Gander Mountain online has them.

            'bout $15 each

ETA: OK, I see them on BassPro as well, but a bit higher (of course)

If you take a $4.00 sandwich and put in there it will come out as a Panini! A Panini is a $9.00 sandwich.

Amazon.com has several different pie irons for sale; some models are Prime-eligible.

Rome makes cast iron pie irons that come "bare" that you need to season yourself before using. There are instructional videos on their blog or YouTube that show how to do this. It's pretty easy but it does take a few hours.

Or you can buy pre-seasoned pie irons that are ready to go out of the box. I own both kinds and haven't really noticed a difference in their performance yet.

That's a great idea! I love the taste/texture of warm peanut butter.

The toas-tite is an aluminum option suitable for the stovetop. I found one tucked away at my cabin and was stoked. They're being made again to original 50s spec.

I need to find ours. We got a set a few years ago, but we've only used the handles with the fork attachments for roasting weinies. I need to make a grilled sammich over a fire!!
