    175w panel at 6 volts would need to be placed in series with 19 more 175w panels to deliver 120v @ 175w.

    Just knowing the wattage doesn't help without knowing the output voltage of the panels, and what is required for the inverter system.

    Wattage is a function of voltage and current. 175w at 115v is about 1.5amps. 175w at 12v is almost 15amps.

    JUST these panels alone are worthless without additional systems to create usable power. These are unregulated and the open circuit voltage might swing as high as 150v (DC). Under load, they might run to 24v... which is still enough to smoke 12v deep cycle batteries.

    If the panel's loaded voltage is 120v (very unlikely), then you would indeed have 2800 watts be connecting 16 panels in parallel.

      Maybe I am still missing something but I can take a 12v car battery and run a 110v microwave pulling 1500w through an inverter. I can then take 17 panels running 24v each and stream those through an charge controller, an inverter, a battery bank and Im GTG. I do not need to run panels in series or parallel to get different voltage. 17 panels at 175w is 2800w pure and simple. Lets say they are 24v so at that point I have batteries running in banks sat to 24v a 24v controller and a 24v to 110v inverter to give me power. I still have 2800 watts coming in and may bhave 5000w going out if thats what my inverter is. Only thing is my batteries would drain while pulling 5k watts and charge when I dropped usage below 2800 pull. Also panels are panels and are always sold by themselves. So the "missing parts" are not really missing at all. The other things you need for a complete system are things you would have to buy with any other panel purchase.

        Ya, if your panels have sufficient voltage to drive the 24v system, then that'll work just fine.

        It all depends on what voltage the Solyndra panels were designed to operate at under load.
        Most of my traffic signal applications (remote school zone flashers and speed displays) run 12v panels... but they are also feeding 12v lighting systems, not an inverter and bumping to 120v.

        Practical application? Two Solar Depot panels in parallel, two 500ah deep-cycle batteries. They operate a flasher circuit that feeds three 10watt LED indications operating at a 50% duty cycle from 6am to 10pm.

        After 4 days of rain/overcast, the systems are dead and I get to take a generator and charger out to the cabinets to bring the batteries back up.

          1500w @ 12v = 125 amps, plus the parasitic losses of the inverter.

          What's the amp-hour rating on your battery, the max draw, and size cables running from the battery to the inverter?

            I understand all the voltage and loss issues. The solyndra panels are cutting edge tech not the same OL same OL chinese garbage panels.

            Anyways.......

            Price a 175w panasonic panel that doesnt need to track the sun. Look at the 360' glass tubes they housed their cells in. Cutting edge!
