If you could only take one....

Thinking about this more today. A big question is whether you have somewhere you are bugging out to? If so, you can cache as much 7.62 as you think you will need there, and also along any possible route you would take.
So now the main negative is that you are limited in what you can carry in your BOB en route to the BOL, assuming you have left your vehicles. Even so, I would still stick with 7.62. Chances are that if you are burning through more than 200 rounds or so on the way to your BOL while on foot, you've probably got bigger problems than round choice...
However, if you plan on wandering with no particular destination point, then 5.56 may be a better option.Comment

I voted on the 5.56, I personally like to have more ammo at my disposal. I would also consider taking the scope off of the 308 and use it on the 5.56 with a QD mount. I would consider sighting it in on the 5.56 with heavy match ammo and have a few mags with match ammo for longer range shooting where accuracy needs to be at its best.Comment

What would I take. . .
If I were planning to hunt fairly big game and I figure I'll have to do it at long distance, I want the .308.
For general purpose and/or self-defense, of those two I would want the 5.56. Long range threats usually aren't that much of a threat and the decrease in weight and the ability to carry more rounds would be sufficient to tip to 5.56mm.CGN's token life-long teetotaling vegetarian. Don't consider anything I post as advice or as anything more than opinion (if even that).Comment

I'd opt for the 5.56, although I would seriously consider some mods to increase accuracy. A simple barrel change might be all that is needed to really open up the range on that rifle. Ammo selection is also a major factor. I'd stock up on as much heavy match grade and hunting ammo as possible.
I'm in a similar situation right now. I just built up a 308 using a DPMS SASS barrel in an effort to have a lighter weight 7.62 that I could potentially carry for long periods if needed. It's insanely accurate, but weighs in at 14 pounds as well despite my intentions of building for light weight. I'm currently purchasing parts to build another upper for the rifle based around a much lighter Rainier Arms "Select" 16" mid length barrel. Target weight with empty magazine and optics is 10 pounds..... I'm not overly optimistic that I'll get there howeverU.S. Navy (Retired) 1994-2015Comment
