    GBHB Emergency Food

Looking for ideas for a food source that I can add to my GBHB that I keep in the trunk of my car. It gets hot in the summer so need something that will not be affected by the heat. Probably need enough for at least 2 days.

I use the mainstay bars. Pretty tasty. Also some mt. House is good if you have water and a camping stove (jet boil FTW)

Agreed for long-term storage/not likely usage, the lifeboat type ration bars mentioned above are the best option. They have a lot of calories and things you need, and are not that bulky or expensive.

They don't even taste that bad. The only thing I didn't care for that much was the feeling it left in my mouth after I ate it.....kind of like I just had a spoon of Crisco. I know you need fat in your diet, but sheesh....

I keep a few of those as well as some of the Datrex sealed water packs in the car at all times.

If you go the Datrex or Mainstay route, make sure to protect them from puncture. Once the airtight seal is broken they wont last a week. I have replaced too many of these to count because a pinhole develepod at a folded corner as they were jostled around in my bag. I now wrap them in tin foil, then a ziplok, and lastly in what ever blanket or clothes are in my bag.

moutain house stuff is tasty, down side is that you need 16 oz of water per bag. It saids for 2 people but I've eaten it by myself and sometimes I'm still hungry afterwards. So you need alot of water to last 2 days just to cook the meals. Canned food is another options, but it's heavy. Like other people said, protein bars are good too.
                The stuff that goes boom.

I'm going through this thought process myself. Like the OP I am looking for 2-3 days worth of food. I've decided to start with the Datrex Emergency Bars (I like that they are individually wrapped). I'm going to supplement that with some items to make hot liquids in case it happens to be cold. Thinking of instant soup, tea, cocoa, etc. They are all small and light, and I only need a few of each. I'm going to plan on changing them out once a year.

I recognize this means you have to have a stove, but it's only for boiling water. I'm looking at the Esbit solid fuel stoves, which are pretty light and small. Reviews indicate they boil water effectively.

This. Selfcontained and the fuel has lasted me at least 15 meals cooked.

But only down side is that jet boil is pretty much only good for boiling water, other than that, it's pretty useless.

Datrex, peanut butter, jerky, and hard candy. Lots of fat, protein, calories and nutrition to keep you going. Peanut butter and jerky are good for 18-24 months or so and are cheap. The other nice think is the heat and cold dont bother them too much.

Oh, and no need for a stove.

You can do other stuff with it, not sure why you say that. Mine came with a pan/pot thing that sits ontop of my jetboil to use other things. And even the directions tell you how to cook things in there container.

awesome! most people look to starches but this man is absolutely correct. it should be fats and proteins with fortified vitamins in your emergency rations foremost IMO. most veggies can give you a good amount of starches anyway
