    Need help with radio equipment

As part of my prepping I am working on setting up communications in our two bug out vehicles as well as handheld.

I need a crash course on the smaller pieces to put it all together.

For radios, for the trucks I will be going with Yaesu FT8900R quad band radios and our handhelds will be Yaesu FT-60R radios.

Antennas for the trucks will either be CR-8900A or UHV-4.

My question really has to do with mounts. Are mounts the same for CB antennas or am I looking for a UHF mount?

Any help from the experts would be appreciated.

Mounts for 2m antennas are typically not the same as CB antennas.

The two connector types found most often on 2m antennas are UHF and NMO. Both the antennas you listed have UHF connectors, also known as PL-259 connectors.

So, you are going to want to look for a mount that has a UHF/PL-259 connector. The first step will be to determine what type of mount you are looking for based on where you want to mount the antenna on your truck. Typical choices include magnetic, window mounts, lip mounts, hatch mounts etc. Once you narrow that down look for mounts with the connector to match your antenna.

This is what I wanted to use on my truck, most likely with the UHV-4. I haven't figured out which mount for my wife's truck.

That looks like a great choice for your truck. You'll need to confirm the connector type on the back of your radio, but UHF is pretty standard on most 2m mobile rigs.

The unit uses a Type M PL259 input for the antenna.

I use a 5/8 wave antenna for my 8900 great swr match on 2 ,440 and 6 meters ,with antenna mounted in center of the roof. drill the hole it is worth it,, the ft-60 has a sma connection and will need an adapter to a 259 connector for most antennas.

If you haven't already, make yourself up some dipoles for use when stationary.

I'm partial to the Diamond K400 mounts. You can have one mount and change out the part that the antenna actually connects to (UHF, NMO and 3/8-24 (what CBs use and Ham Stick style antennas)). And they completely adjust each way.
