        What are you packing for?

This is my General pack. Would take me to Freezing, below 32 i would take extra cold weather gear, but i would wear it not pack it. So weight should remain near the same.

12! wow thats good. I am hoping that with my changes mentioned above and maybe trap camping i might get to sub 15.

My pack and gear always weighs the same going in, on purpose, about 42 lbs. My logic is that if I'm going for a week (which I haven't had the time to do in decades), or a weekend, I want the same muscle memory. The difference in load is the food. In the last 7 years, four day trips are the longest time I've been able to set aside. So for those short week end jaunts, I cook GOOD, and suprise my crew with most hearty meals. I'll marinate a tri-tip or deer roast for 3 days and freeze it, triple foil wrap in freezer zip loc, serve with Zaterains Red Beans & Rice, or country style ribs instead of beef. Chicken fajitas another supper and sausage breakfast burritos, coffee with French Vanilla the morning out. They've all started to do the same, Tortenelli, Liguinni with white calm sauce & whole baby clams. My sons kitchen spices include sesemee oil, garlic, parsely and sweet thick soy for his dry simen noodle snack. I have tubes for paint balls that fit fresh baquets perfect. Of course I've got the usual freeze dried grub and MREs. There's nothing like winding down a day of treking with a killer meal and kicking back in a ThermoRest chair kit sipping on a Sigg of Merlot. Not what you expected I'm sure. Go light, Go fast, be my guest. PAX

There is nothing wrong with having good food or a good knife going light does not mean you can't carry good things. Saving ounces on other things let you bring other items that you feel are more important.

I do disagree on keeping your pack weight the same. it does not sound like you camp often enough to benefit from muscle memory.

                    For day hikes I carry:
                    Mountain Hardware Agama 33L Pack
Black Diamond Spot headlamp + batteries (plus a small backup light on planned night hikes)
                    Jacket
                    Extra socks
Magnesium bar with a Bic as a backup + 4 cotton balls
                    Map + compass
Small red clip on LED light + batteries (used for night hikes that involve walking along a road at some point in time, but I always keep it in the pack.)
Full change of clothes if we're doing water crossings
Rain gear if rain is a possibility
                    A length of paracord
                    Hand sanitizer
A small amount of toilet paper and two paper towels
                    1.5L of water
Enough food for the hike times 1.5
                    Katadyn Micropur water tablets
                    Space blanket

8-11lbs depending on the variables (generally clothing and food). When I remove the rain gear, change of clothes (sans jacket and socks), food, and water, I'm down to about 5lbs. This doesn't count my pocket knife and cell phone which I keep in my pocket (phone is used for GPS). I used to used a 18L pack that shaved off about a pound of weight, but it was a really tight fit with everything crammed in there, and I got tired of having to empty out the bag just to get to something on the bottom so I stepped it up to the 30L range so that I had some room to rummage around.

My wife or dog also carry other "shared" essentials, such as a (good) first aid kit, more water, and a leatherman. My wife and my pack weights are generally about the same, dogs pack weight ranges from 4-5lbs.

Some of you guys have heavy stuff.

Mine weighs in at 36 lbs without food or water, of which I don't have too much in the pack itself. I have made several movements with that, and it doesn't bother me much, even over extended distances. I've had a good bit of marching time with this though, and wouldn't suggest someone just throw on 30+ lbs and take off without working up to it.

No, I don't get out as often as I like for it to make any real difference. It's mostly for my memory that I have some muscles, and I can only carry that weight for 10-12 miles at a shot, and then if I've only got about 2500' gain or loss above 6500'. After 50 years of backpacking that's all I'm good for any more. I only managed to get to a few places over the last several years, Bull Run & Sword X2, the Blue Hole X5, Bear, Rock, Eagle & Devils Lakes, Highland Creek X2, Hell Hole, Cherry Creek, Utica & Elephant Rock Loop, and I played the tourist in Yosemite 3 time this year (at least once a year since '68) and car camped or walk in a couple. My bag weight only gets under 10 lbs on day excursions. My H.A.W.G. rig for deer hunting is around 15 lbs with some use specific gear like bone saw and gut hook knife, but then you only move about 200 yards an hour. I don't really count that as backpacking, even though you're off trail. For 10 years, I also carried a .41 mag Black Hawk, which added about 7 lbs, but I was 60 lbs lighter and could push for 20 miles up to the tree line. These days that 42 lbs does include a Beretta Jaguar and extra mag. No phone, no gps. PAX

HAWG. lol that's my day pack love that pack! We will have to agree to disagree. Keeping a pack as light as practical is my goal. If someone is having issues hiking lighting the load will help.

Those are some great hikes you have been on.
