One thing I didn't notice on folks lists (my have missed one or two) are maps. If your batteries run out and your GPS is dead you still need to find your way home or may need to find an alternate route. I have a map marked up with ways to get home avoiding over and under passes and other alternate routes home from work.

I don't know if you've ever been to San Diego or not but there are plenty of areas where the quickest route is through an undeveloped area, like Mission Trails regional park. If the military or a natural disaster blocked one of the freeways you might find yourself hiking tens of miles through undeveloped areas in canyons and over hills. For example even walking the 52 from Miramar to east county is over ten miles, with nature on both sides.

Different items for different locations I suppose.

          What's a GPS

Honestly... I have never used one.

I have always had a very good sence of direction, but I do keep a map book in the trail rig just in case

It looks like the most common itmes would be
              Water
              Mini IFAK of some kind
              Flashlight/Chem light
              High calorie type food
              Multi tool/Knife
              Gloves
              Fire starting equipment
              Handgun of any type
              Extra Ammo and Mags

and last but not least, a durable low profile bag to carry it all in.
I have the mentioned items above plus a few other small items. I agree this is not the best list, everyones needs are different! But I feel this is a good start for folks to fine tune to their needs.
I carry and use a 5.11 Tactical Large Tool Kit Bag, works perfectly well.
