Don't shoot across roads, make sure you have a safe back drop, make sure you're outside of city limits and at least a few hundred yards from any structure (I believe the rule is 250 yards, but may be more) -

It cannot be inherited, nor can it ever be purchased.
You and no one alive can buy it for any price. It is impossible to rent and cannot be lent.
You alone and our own have earned it with...Your sweat, blood and lives. You own it forever.
The title is....."United States Marine".

You're going to be limited to what you can access if we start getting decent snow fall. One of the best things you can do is stop on way up and get a forest land map from the local office up there. It's right off the highway in Placerville
Eldorado National Forest
100 Forni Road
Placerville, CA 95667

You might be able to call and order one and have it before you leave on your trip. It will give you an idea of where the BLM land is. Private land up there is usually pretty clearly marked what little is in the forestry areas.
Just like any place certain rules apply. No shooting across roads, clean up your mess, yada yada yada..... But the good thing is you won't need a campfire permit this time of year if your not camping in a campground.
