I am fairly certain there was no engine computer on GM diesels in '86. There is a glow plug controller, but that should be fairly easy to eliminate if it got zapped.

As long as you have fuel and a way to crank it over, it should run.

Well I have good news and bad news. The good news is that engine SHOULD survive an EMP. The bad news is 80's chevy diesels sometimes didn't survive driving off dealer lot.

        +1

80's were not a great time for Chevy and diesels. There were a lot of lemons. My boss owned one and I had to drive it a lot and seemed I was always on the side of the road waiting for a tow.

We had another guy up in Placerville that ran around with a huge billboard in the back of his that said "dealer name Lemon", of course most of the time it was on the side of the road parked waiting for a tow!.

An early Cummins Dodge would make it. Only electrical items on the motor are the fuel shutoff solenoid, air charger preheater and solenoids and a few gauge connections.

My 87 6.2L equipped M998 HMMWV had a hard time starting even without an EMP! Swollen Glow Plugs were a nightmare.

Notenuf, are you referring to the d250 dodges? My buddy has a 1992

Was also looking at the benz diesels from the 80s

Probably wont survive. There is a little coil in the fuel pump that burns out all on its own. EMP tests on the in the 80's on HUMVEE's that used them all failed.

And like others said they dont need any EPM to stop working. They do it all by themselves.

I would also look at a 94 - 95 dodge cummins as they were mechanical as the first gen. Trans is mechanical except for 4th gear on the auto. You would just have a 3 speed but would work fine.

Forgive me if I am entirely off base here, but how exactly do you expect to crank the engine if your electrical system is fried?

The starter motor would likely survive an EMP. As would basic devices such as the ignition switch.
