Cops nab bizarre Prospect Park poachers

Haha this is great! Now you know where to go when the grocery stores shut down.

Maybe the reporter has never heard of this but, poaching in parks has been going on since parks began.

In the early 80's, I remember hearing about a group of FOB Somoians poaching in Golden Gate Park. They did not know it was illegal and had been told to make their money stretch as far as they could.

Also, I have the shotgun my grandfather used to use when he harvested quail from SF City parks. Growing up in the depression taught him to harvest his own food and old habits die hard.

I remember reading that Hemingway would catch pigeons in the park and bring them home under the covers in the baby carriage.

I've got a golf course all staked out for when times are tough(er). Filled with geese so indifferent to people you could walk up and kick them in the head. Not much of a secret though so they won't last long.

My dentist tells me stories about how he and his friend will go to a local park and catch a rabbit for dinner. Especially in the canyon areas of San diego, there are tons of rabbits around here.

My dad told me depression era stories. He and his two brothers came home from school about 3 in the afternoon. Their dad gave each a shot gun shell; if you are hungry don't miss. See ya at dinner time.

Many many years ago a fellow everyone called "Old Jack" hung around the motorcycle shop I used to frequent---he was raised in the SFV way back when it was all farms---during the Great Depression, he would be handed one box of 22 rds and was told by his father that he was expected to return with 50 edible critters---one per round---that was the only meat the family consumed for a period of several years (they grew some plants and traded for other food items). That sort of memory sticks with you. With todays larger populations, this probably wouldn't work.

A baby bison went missing from Golden Gate Park a few years back... never was found.

I can guarantee ive scoped out a half dozen urban parks and wetlands. Problem is, so have 2 million others.

...or, your local zoo would work for fresh meat too. (juuuust kidding)

My grandpa would be given one shotgun shell and told to go get SOME ducks for dinner.

"Cops have busted a group of oddball poachers in Prospect Park — a band of vagrants that was trapping and eating ducks, squirrels and pigeons. Parks officers wrote four tickets — two for killing wildlife and two for illegal fishing — totaling $2,100 in fines during a two-day period last week."

And just HOW is a band of vagrants going to pay $2100 in fines? Whatta joke.

I don't have any idea why all the homeless don't eat Canada Goose
