Serious EMP question

All I know from them is the basic. An EMP is given off when there is a nuclear blast. Also there are EMP weapons that we've all seen on discovery channel where stuff stops worker.
WITHOUT going into horribly written books, movies and video games what are the exact dangers, expected outcome and and expected down time of said EMP?
Another calgunner said something about picking up a science book and thats the type of answer I would like to hear about. What scientifically sound answer can I get to my question?

There is a government report cited at the end of "One Second After" the fiction book about it. They have a web site for the report and an "association" that has been lobbying congress to "harden" a lot of equipment and essentials so the impacts are minimized. I'll have to dig that book up on the iPad and find the link for you.

See here and here, the sources I am quoting from are as credible as you can get. Stop worrying about EMPs (not gonna happen) and start thinking about solar flares. Four to ten years (estimated by the feds, not me) is a long time to be without power.

ehhh not worried. i started reading the first report but today is one of those days where I ened to empty a bottle of jameson so my attention span is like... everywhere. I just wanted some good info so I could have a lef to stand on when entering a debate.
So far, loss of electricity is the lease of my worries if a nuclear weapon goes off. Chances are, one able to fire off in high altitude will be from an actual state and with M.A.D. , loss of electricity will probably only last a few hours till the world is turned to ash
