    Hiking in norcal

I want to start hiking as a form of entertainment and exercise.

Looking for places in the bayarea or within reasonable driving distances, but I dont want something crowded with joggers, real hiking.

I have no idea where to go.

Also would like to take my dog, would this be dangerous for her without special training?

I have good boots, a good pack with hydration and emergency gear. Will probably get my dog some gear to if it safe for her to come.

Also would like to open carry, or LUCC.

    TIA

I'm sorry to say anything with in an hour of Oakland is pot country or public park like facilities.....like Fioli which is south of SF off 280. I think there are some trails around there and few joggers on them, but plenty of walkers.

Go to the different City and County webpages and refer to their Parks. This will give the locations and information on the hiking areas. There are plenty real hike areas within the Bay Area, but nothing will void of others.

            Mt. Diablo (no gun/dog)
            Mt. Tamalpias (novgun/dog)
            St. Helena (no gun/dog)
            Pt. Reyes (no gun/dog)

            Further:
Cow Mountain Rec Area (gun and dog okay)
            Snow Mountain(gun and dog okay)
Boggs Rec. Forest(gun and dog okay)
            Pinnacles National Monument (no gun/dog)

It gets really hard when you want to bring a dog along, so check the park regs first so you dont get there and have to leave because you're dog is not allowed............and dont tempt the tickets for the dogs, up on st helena ive been told its a $500 ticket.

Wildernesses are gonna be the place to go because you can take the dog and gun.

I will look into these areas, thank you.

Iam worried about the safety of my dog, are snakes abundant in those areas?

My dog has never seen a snake so I dont knwo how she would react.

East Bay is a hiker's mecca - but no guns

Redwood Regional Park between Oakland and Moraga - check West Ridge Trail, Fern Trail, Tres Sendas Trail, Stream Trail. No joke hiking - easy to do 6-8 miles with 1000' of elevation gain - and only see someone every 10 minutes or less. Dogs on leash on everything but West Ridge (and East Ridge, but that's more crowded - its fire road, not single track. East Ridge + West Ridge are an 11 mile loop, off leash the whole way, no rattlers.)

Chabot has even more backcoutry. Shorter hikes in Sibley Round Top and Joaquin Miller (both Oakland hills) but lots of elevation and fewer people. Wildcat Canyon in Berkeley is super rugged, but crowded.

Getting out a little, the Sunol Regional Wilderness is VAST and uncrowded. Easy to find a 10 mile loop there where you might see someone every 30 minutes or less. Sunol is crazy big and nobody there.
I don't shoot because I like guns, I shoot because I hate paper.

There's a mistaken impression that conservatives don't like the environment. We do, we love the environment. We just call it the outdoors and we go there to kill stuff.

Information about hiking trails in the San Francisco bay area, including photos of wildflowers, animals, trees, plants, and butterflies

This site has an OK list of hikes in the bay area.

Just hit the east bay regional park district website and go from there. There's a huge number of options.
