    Wood stoves/ emergency stoves

I've been thinking of buying a portable emergency/survival stove. The first thing that came to my mind are wood stove, similar to what they use in other countries that does not have the luxury of gas and electric. However those are all stone or ceramic stoves, and all that I can find online here are the metal ones. Any one have experience and recommendations on portable woods stoves?

I have the tiny, folding, wood burner from Sportsmans Guide, it's a little flimsy, and not very big, but it actually works for small camp chores (great for heating a pot of water or coffee percolator).

        Check out the Volcano II

will cook with Propane, wood, charcoal. Might not be compact, but don't overlook versatility.

I am buying the Volcano next week. Looks like it is very handy.

I'm thinking of attempting to build my own.

Edit: this one is more for heating a cabin or room, not necessarily for cooking, although it could be adapted.

                Kelley Kettle

                Kelley Kettle

I am still very impressed with this rig. With twigs, dry grass and bark I was able to out boil my Colman 10,000 btu Propane Stove.

Worth a look into if you haven't.

                Regards,
                Mike

I have been thinking about converting a propane tank, but I don't know any metal welder or fabricator? Plus the cost of materials and labor might just be the same when I buy a manufactured stove.

Isn't the Kelly kettle just for boiling water?

I love the kelly kettle, but its VERY small cooking surface bothers me. If it was 6 inches or so it would be perfect.

Another vote for clbshooter to give us a review. I have a Volcano but still haven't tried it out. I'd like to know if what I bought is as good as it sounds or really sucks as much as a gaping chest wound.

My brother told me about the Volcano. I told him I was about to order one and he said don't bother I bought you one for xmas, so now all I have to do is wait and then go get it in N.C. Can't wait to see my bro and his family.

I picked up a 1 year old wood stove for 350. Nice stove with a glass door and an electric fan motor for more heat.
