Made, Tested Buddy Burner (Pics)

Cool! Thanks for the pics! We used to make those back in my Boy Scout days. Works like charm. I have a bunch made up just lying around as well.

Another cheap stove we used to make was using a standard coffee can. Punch some holes along the bottom (on the curved part), throw in a roll of TP, soak it in alcohol and there you go. (sorry for the tangent)

I didn`t get a chance to do my burn it til it dies test I had an upstairs shower crap out on me this morning and had water coming thru the livingroom ceiling. Had some repairing to do. I will get to testing it soon.

I wonder how to make one of these to run a gas fridge. you only need a small flame, like the size of a candle, but one of these with tons of wax might keep it going for a few days maybe? long enough for a camping trip? I guess that just makes it a candle. hmmm..

I have heard that if you wipe liquid dish soap on the bottom of the pan before using the soot will wash off.

I wonder if one could simply take a sheet of aluminum foil and wrap it around the outside pan/pot. Press the foil up the side of the pot and fold a small lip up and into the rim of the pot/pan. That way all of the black soot only wrecks the foil. Hmmmmm. I think i will try my idea out.

I made a bunch of these today. I used some tins that had lids that I've been saving from hooka tobacco purchases. They are about twice the size of the tuna cans. The lid is nice for snuffing them out when you're done. I didn't have any extra candles so i went to the 99cent store and bought some of those candles with the different "saints" on them. It took about 2 candles to fill one of these big buddy burners. Wish I had free wax but whatever. I'm going to bring one of these on my next outing and test it out. I like the idea of not having to carry fuel and stove. Might even be lighter than my current backpacking stove.
The only downside I guess is that you have no temperature control other than maybe holding the pot farther away from the stove. So if something calls for simmering, then it may be difficult. But that is a small price to pay.
I may do an experiment if I get bored and see how long it burns and how many liters of water I can boil.

If you mean the buddy burners, the wax is the fuel.
If you mean what was I carrying before the buddy burner, I was using whitegas.

Sure wouldn`t hurt to try. this burner really sooted up the bottom of my pot. Real PITA to try and clean off

as an aside, that soot can be scraped off and saved. Its called lamp black and is used to make ink amongst other things

Maybe covering the bottom of the vessel with aluminum foil can fix that. The only thing is carrying the foil without crumpling and tearing in the BOB would be the issue.
