I head out to the desert a lot (well, a lot when I'm working) and in Death Valley especially, you see tons of folk who've no idea what they're doing. Europeans, in particular, rent the RVs and head out. One thing most of them do with consistency is wear only sandals. Another basic rule these people don't know about is how much hotter the ground can be over the ambient temp, maybe up to 50 degrees hotter. Seen lots of burnt feet out there.
In addition to my own water, if I'm not off the beaten path yet, I'll carry a pack of those small personal water bottles; inevitably I'll end up handing those out to these people. Both in the desert and the mountains, it seemed like everyone who needed something always made a beeline for my truck. It was only later that an enduro rider told me why. With the fuel and water cans on the roof rack (red and blue), from a distance they thought I was police/first responder because from a distance they were seeing them as red and blue lights on the roof of a white vehicle.
