    What about something like this?

I know it is a little pricey but no noise. If you mount it discreetly there is no visible signature. Do not need to worry about gas. Anyone have any experience with this?

There are plans on the internet for DIY solar generators. I have been gathering pieces/parts and plan to build one good for 1750 watts. I may try to incorporate a wind turbine in addition to the solar panels.

Edit: That ad looks a little misleading as it states 5kw of battery power but the inverter output is only 2400 watts. continuous

Don't forget about the simple generator most of you already have-YOUR CAR. Most 4 and 6 cylinder cars will burn less fuel an hour then most generators and are extremely quiet. You can recharge your battery banks and/or hook up an inverter off your car battery. Of course it won't put out as much power as a big generator, but will run the fridge, tv and some lights just fine.

Both the Honda and Yamaha inverters are very quiet. Less than 60 dB at 10 feet at maximum load. I doubt I can get much quieter than that with current technology. Once I have a backup solar system and LED lighting I am probably set for most mid length disasters. Another advantage is that one generator can be connect to a matching model and the two will syncronize the output. That means I can have two portable generators that can act as a single generator when I need more power.

The biggest disadvantage is the price. Around $1000 for a 2000W (1600W continous) model.
