Do you need a trapping license?

Are trapping license require if you want to practice placing survival trapping? I want to build traps and set on my next week long camping trip and I don't want to piss off Ranger Rick.

Yes! You do not want to set traps. In california, trapping (snaring included) is VERY highly regulated. Way more so than hunting. Where you can trap, what you can trap, the type of trap or snare you can use.
Be VERY careful...
That being said, I learned form my uncle to trap and snare. We did it on his property up near lake Orville. ONLY in an area that he was buddies with the local Ranger, and had worked out a "deal"....
It is a blast, you may just try getting a video or watching youtube videos of where traps and snares should be placed. Then the next time you go out camping, you start to look for those signs. The slide a beaver makes when he bellies into the water. The way rabbitts rub their fur off on the base of trees near their holes...etc.
