Any suggestion on a Camping Axe???

Hey folks, looking for some suggestions for an all around camping axe. My last camping trip, we were trying to split some hard wood. And my friend's tomahawk wasnt able to do anything to the wood. I tried batoning with my kabar but it proves to be too damn hard. So now I'm looking for an all around camping axe to take with me. Are any of the cold steel Trail boss or trail hawk any good??? Do you have any other brands you can suggest??? This should most likely stay at the camp site, might take it on hikes if I know the trail gets bushy. Thanks in advance.

I have a gerber and I loved it until my brother used it on the side of my old car. It was able to split anything since then I have sharpened it again just haven't had the time to use it again yet

Estwing makes great hatchets and small axes or gransfors bruks are even more top of the line.

You can try the Woodman's Pal. http://www.woodmanspal.com/
I had one in Afghanistan and used it for just about everything. It feels like a machete but isn't flimsy. It's pretty tough. It would be great for taking on hikes or using around your camp. The only drawback is that it's not going to split any major wood like an axe can, but for smaller logs it works well.

Fiskars... I've had the 28" pro chopping axe for a few years now and it still works as good as the first day I got it. The handle is virtually un-breakable and the blade stays sharp and the axe is SUPER light weight (little over 2lbs). They make different sizes from a 14" hatchet to a full size 36" axe but I find that the 28" version is the perfect size and weight where it's light enough that you can carry it on your pack on a hike and long enough to give you some real chopping leverage around the the camp site. Best axe and bang for your buck in my opinion. Read up on them and you'll see what I mean. HTH.

Sounds like you needed an axe and not the Hawk you were using. The Trail Boss is a little closer to what you need though. I have had the same problem before, had a nice hatchet but what I needed was an axe. You cannot go wrong with a Gransfors Bruks product. When I go hunting/camping I always bring both, a nice heavy axe and usually a hawk or one of my belt axes, I kind of like the double bit axes with the blades ground thick on one side and thin on the other, one for heavy chopping work and the other for skinning, parting out animals, and other fine work, typically referred to as a "Nesmuk style"

If you have some time, check out the Gransfor Bruks line at this store below located in Oakland.

Here's a their site below with a few of the axes listed but I believe they have more than that instore. When I was there, they even had a Gransfor double bladed competition throwing axe that I almost got (for camping fun) but I thought something practical was prolly a better idea and I ended up with the American felling axe model of which they had a couple different lengths of.

Wow thanks guys for the great info, Calgunners never fail to impress me. I'm reading about the brands you gave me as we speak. Research during work FTW. BTW After looking for a bit, i'm really digging the Gransfor Bruks line. And holy crap, they are expensive.

Ive had one ot the Estwig steel axes for 30 years now. It has been used for just about everything from digging trenches, demoing houses to cutting firewood. They are $40 at home depot.
Wood dosent split easy unless it is dry. Some wood never splits easy. Bring along a sledge hammer and you can split most wood.
