Solar Flare Sparks Biggest Eruption Ever Seen on Sun

    From here:

No worries from this one, but keep those generators handy. A direct hit from a future flare could take out the grid if the power companies choose not to bring it offline in time.

Can you imagine if that pulse hit us? It would dwarf any man-made EMP weapon any enemy could deploy. Welcome to the dark ages. "One second after" anyone? At least in this case the whole earth would be affected and not just the US.

I don't know about you, but I haven't properly prepared for an EMP.

Having recently finished One Second After, this is exactly what I was thinking when I heard about this.

The solar flare scenario is a little better than One Second After's EMP scenario because:

            1) The solar flare can only take out equipment connected to long lines. Faraday cages aren't required as there is no fast rise time pulse.

            2) The power companies will get a warning far in advance of the flare's impact on the earth. They at least have the option to take the grid offline to protect it, vs. no warning at all in an EMP attack.

However, deciding to put a lot of people in the dark (#2), even for a limited period of time and for a good reason, will be a tough decision to make. If they don't make that decision and their big transformers fry... get ready for civil unrest and probably a die off.

                Wow!

Massive. I've seen solar flare movies on the science channels, but wow!

I'd go with the . Much more stylish:

                  Cozy, Soft, and Discrete

Prefer a shielding garment that no one will notice? This typical looking hoodie sweatshirt does the trick for the upper body and head! Made from very comfortable 90% cotton and 10% Silver and tested to 99% RF attenuation over the frequency range from 800 MHz to 18 GHz. In addition, the high conductivity of silver causes Silverell to have antistatic behavior, plays an important role in minimizing body odor, and has a strong inhibitory effect on the growth of bacteria (actually acts as an antiseptic!). Loose fitting pull over style, not gathered at cuffs and without a drawstring for the hood. Light weight gray fabric. Wash in cold water, delicate cycle, line dry. No bleach. Suitable for both men and women. Style may vary from photo. Specify size: S, M, L, XL
If you survive the flare, you can melt down the hoodie, separate out the silver, and trade it for more ammo.
