We had pitch-wood to start fire but I practiced making fire without it, I used some lint that I carry in my BOB it was windy and raining so that made things interesting. I learned a few things about staying dry when tent camping in a storm, utilizing tarps, etc. I also did a 1,000 foot vertical climb/hike that lasted 3 hours with my new Lowa boots and BOB loaded with 1.5 liters of water, my SIG p229 with 3 loaded mags, first aid kit, flashlights, food, and other things I keep in my BOB. I learned that waist straps are a must for long term travel, my ebay bag does not have them and my shoulders paid for it.

All in all it was a great trip and experience. I want to do a lot more camping this summer and will practice various skills each time.
Waist straps are VERY important, thats where the majority of the weight should lie, shoulder straps are just supportive to keep the pack in position.
The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

+1 if you go to a good outdoors/mountaineering store they will have sand bags to weigh down packs so you can feel the benefit of a waist belt.

I like to make char cloth at the campfire.

I saw the eggs and bacon in a brown paper bag technique at a Scout leader powwow last fall. It was so cool.
Put 3-4 bacon slices side by side on inside wall of an expanded bag with 2 eggs on top of bacon, sunny side up style. Fold the bags end tightly keeping the bag expanded. Poke a long stick on the topside of the bag near the folded edge. Feed it through poke it through again near the other side. Now your ready to cook, hold it near hot coals or flames, Watch out it so it doesn't catch fire. It takes a little while to cook.
