Will chili peppers stop scent dogs?

Can chili peppers or pepper spray be used some way to stop scent dogs from tracking?

From owning a bird dog I can tell you their sense of smell is amazing. My dog can tell the difference between a live bird, scared bird, wounded bird, dead bird, bird that walked by and left a trail etc all from 50 feet away.

No, from what I understand dogs smell in layers, so they can "sift" through a multitude of smells to find the right one. Its why K9 dogs can smell a drug trafficker's stash even if its hidden in a tank full of gasoline.
This may sound strange and unbelievable to you, but it is real and true.

Dogs can smell human remains under water, dogs can track humans for miles days after they passed a spot and smell cancer. I could see pepper spray overwhelming them temporally but i really doubt for long.

Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

No, it has actually been known to improve the scent for the chase dog, about the best you could hope for would be to give a throw off scent, i.e. running a clover leaf pattern. But a well trained dog and handler are going to find you. If the dog drops the scent, the handler will pick up your track and get the dog back on target.

The reason I ask is I have been reading some of these TEOTWAWAKI (roving gangs)threads and I was reminded of a jail break in AZ about 40 years ago where the bad guys eluded the cops for about 3-4 weeks. Rumor was that they used chili peppers to elude the dogs. The cops eventually got them but they did indeed elude the dogs.

i would think a guy running with chilli peppers would be easy to follow even for humans!

                  You talking about this guy.

no there were a couple of brothers with family members help escaped Florence Prison in Az, in the 70's can't remember their names but Earler comes to mind. They eluded dogs multiple times in the wilderness aspects of the manhunt, who knows that could have been misdirection. They used some irrigation canals near where I lived. They had a good support system all set up outside ready for the escape. These guys were the type that indeed did belong in prison, the cops shot them up at a roadblock so end of story. There was a lot of talk about how they had caches in the desert and used the canals and peppers to evade the dogs. Anyway mythbusters says it ain't so. They probably used misdirection.

I understand fertilizer is really hard for dogs to work through. I think Scott Peterson was a fertilizer salesman, and his house was full of it when he killed his wife. I don't know the full story, but the search dogs were having a hard time on that case...
