For the money I'd rather switch out less affordable stuff more often, invest in purification and filters. Just me.

I agree. Keep a few days supply of potable water on hand.

After that, you can get water almost anywhere under almost any circumstances. Just run it through the filters.

"Did I say "republic?" By God, yes, I said "republic!" Long live the glorious republic of the United States of America. Damn democracy. It is a fraudulent term used, often by ignorant persons but no less often by intellectual fakers, to describe an infamous mixture of socialism, miscegenation, graft, confiscation of property and denial of personal rights to individuals whose virtuous principles make them offensive." - Westbrook Pegler

Yep, you can get a reasonable purification system for under 200 bucks if you look hard enough. I pieced one together with a .02 sawyer filter and a camelbak pump, and an intermediate filter to keep the gunk outta the sawyer that will pretty much last forever, with cleaning. Lot more useful than the same $$ worth of canned water.

It should be noted that there is an important distinction between filtration and purification. Most filter systems do not purify the water.

If you wanted to, couldn't you just do this yourself (with the glass canning jars)? (although they would not be as durable as metal cans)...even without a canner I would think.

            Just curious....

              Both

However both are fairly reasonable, but you are right there is filtration and purification. I'm not even sure I have it right, but I bought the $11 purification Calcium Hypochlorite from ebay:

I haven't picked a filter yet, but there are not that costly - $100/$125 maybe less.

The way I look at it the benefit of those canned water is long term storage. I mean 30 years before rotation is not bad. The down fall is the cost and amount of water per can which is less than 30 ounces.

I've thought about just purchasing several cans to keep in my vehicle's trunk or back seat. Heck they can be stored any postion with no worries of leakage.

At least you have ready to drink water on hand.

Another option is canned dehydrated water. It's ultralight and lasts forever. http://www.bernardfoods.com/foodserv...datedwater.htm

Never tried canned water but have tried boxed water. Military uses it in the Middle East and Africa (which is wear I encountered it). The containers are cardboard boxes with plastic lining. You cut off a corner and drink right from the box. The other deployments, such as those to Europe we had traditional bottled water. Could have had something to do with the long term storage needs of one region that didn't apply to the other. In Europe the water was brought in specifically for our mission. In the Middle East and Africa is was there waiting for any US Forces who needed it locked up in a hanger on a runway of an airbase that belonged to a friendly country in the region. The logistics behind such things is pretty trippy.

The .02 sawyer I mentioned is a purification system. It's EPA qualified for anything down to virus level. Takes me about a minute a liter as the flow rate is lower than the bigger filter.

Dehydrated water is the way to go. You can keep 1,000's of gallons in your closet.

Monster provides canned water for the Warped Tour workers and bands. I drank quite a bit of it when I worked on the tour. It tastes just exactly like you'd think canned water would.

Dehydrated water, on the other hand, tastes just like fresh water after it's been properly re-hydrated.
