OK, I could use some help here. I’m trying to unlock my radio so I can use it as a glorified scanner for the most part. I have a basic understanding of radios and the laws that govern their use but lack some of the technical knowledge to move forward with my Wouxun KG-UV3D

First problem is unlocking. Here are a few frequencies I want to program:
    156.0750
    156.8000
    154.3250

On the unlock program that I downloaded, there is a Low Power and High Power section to enter data. Does Low Power and High Power correspond to UHV and VHF? What am I supposed to know about entering numbers in these boxes?

Below that, there are 4 boxes: EEP Read, EEP Write, Open and Save. Do I click the Read, Write, Open or Save button after entering data in the Low Power/High Power section?

I anticipate that after properly unlocking the radio, I would be able to open the other program I downloaded and start entering frequencies or directly enter frequencies using the radio itself.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm on my way out the door but you don't need to unlock the radio to listen. You just punch in the frequency. I am sending you a PM.

It would help to know what software you're using, screenshots would be helpful as well. High Power and Low Power have to do with how many watts the radio uses to transmit with. Open/Save probably has to do with opening and saving files; Read/Write to do with pulling configs off the radio and saving them back to the radio.

You don't use the unlock program to program the frequencies you want into the radio, that is just to unlock frequency ranges

Before doing anything, remove the battery from your radio and look at the frequency range your unit is capable of receiving and transmitting on. Write this down.

Next, have the unlock program running and make sure the radio is hooked up to the USB port the program is using. Test this by first setting the values in the top 8 boxes to 0, then pressing the "read button." The program should read the frequency ranges set on your HT and display them in the top eight boxes.

To be able to receive and transmit over the full range of which your unit is capable (even frequencies you are not licensed to transmit on), enter that range in the 8 boxes at the top. "Low power" means the 2m band, and "High power" means the 440MHz band. In my HT's case, these values were 136-174 and 400-470, which I entered in for both receive and transmit.

Finally, press the "write" button to write these settings to your HT.

The "open" and "save" buttons let you save and open text settings files to your computer's hard drive for later use. I.e. you can "save" the default settings to your HDD so that later you can revert to them by "open"ing that file then "writing" to your HT.

Thanks for the help guys, I'm making progress in spite of the lack of good written instructions. I'm not at the place I want to be yet but I'm making slow forward progress. Crazy offered to help me on the phone and I'm grateful for that - what a gentleman!

We still need to know what software you're using twinfin, if you are using the KG-UV Commander software then the high or low power setting is the Transmit level and NOT whether it is UHF or VHF. Low power is 1 Watt on both VHF and UHF frequencies, and high power is 5 Watts on VHF or 4 Watts on UHF. See pg 16 of the manual. My radio is labeled as a KG-UVD1P, yours may differ if you have a different model.
