    Mini Survival Kit

So I got bored and decided to see how much usable survival things I could put in an Altoids tin. At that size you could always have it either on your in a pocket or in your every day carry bag.

Here is what I came up with so far. I still need to add a button compass and I think I'll be close to done. Although I know I'll be adding and/or subtracting as time progresses and I think of more things.

Most of the stuff I already had in my house. The only thing I didn't have was the magnifying card. Again, I acknowledge that I'm still missing a small 20mm button compass. I think a couple of butterfly bandages would be nice and some plastic bag to gather water as well.

Any suggestions, tips, comments for things to add or remove are gladly welcomed. But please explain why you think something needs to be added/removed.

    Row 1: (left to right)

Signal Mirror - cut from a larger sheet of side mirror repair kit from auto parts store. This is not glass but some sort of laminate plastic.

2'-3' Duct Tape - Rolled flat

Dryer Lint/Vaseline - for starting fires, put in tiny ziplock bags (get the bags from hobby stores)

Assorted Bandaids - for assorted minor cuts

    Row 2: (left to right)

Mighty Bright Magnifier - another source of starting fires and also to magnify things!

Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil - 2 sq feet folded up tight (use for cooking, make a cup to boil water, etc)

Razor Blade - for precision cutting and to supplement the blade you already carry on your person (you do carry a knife don't you?)

Super Glue - Tiny tube, used to glue or mend things. Can also be used as a temporary way to close a wound.

Safety Pins - various uses, even as a fish hook.

    Row 3: (left to right)

Strike Anywhere Matches - dipped in paraffin to water proof. Small piece of striker.

Fish hooks, swivels, split shot - for fishing

Hot Glue Sticks - 2 small chunks to glue and mend things. Use fire to melt.

Steel wire - use to lash things, snare, fix items

Needles - remove splinters, sew/mend clothing, emergency wound closure

    Row 4: (left to right)

30' 20lb test braided fishing line - for fishing, lashing, sewing, wound stitching

Alcohol Prep Pads - use to clean wounds, also can be used as fire starter

Rubber Bands - wrapped around tin, many other uses

Anti-Bacteria Ointment - to treat minor wounds.

Pretty thoughtful. Me, I'd have a at least five $20's in there too. Cash gets gas, water, food, a place to crash. just my 2 cents. nice kit.

Here is a link to a producer that has made these for the military http://www.bestglide.com/military_po...vival_tin.html

This is similar to what you have started, but already done. All of this is described in detail in John "Lofty" Wiseman's SAS Survival Guide.

equipped.com and the ETS forum there are some of the best resources for some of this stuff.

I just searched for the first time and there are quite a few kits out there already. I had no idea people were selling similar kits!

I was inspired by a book I glimpsed at the book store. It was called 'Build the Perfect Survival Kit' by John McCann.

Good suggestion. I would further breakdown one of those $20's into smaller denominations.

I also thought of putting in a couple aspirin and some purification tablets to round out the kit.
