I've "known" him on other forums since 2005. He may be a bit "out there" for some (most?) people, but you can never be too prepared.
One thing I'll say... after the nuclear bombs fall, out from under the rubble will crawl cockroaches, a few general contractors, and PC
And if you ever want to commission some awesome photography, including Yellowstone in the winter, give him a call.- Rich

Ditto.Im sure you could survive on one gallon per day just sitting down and staring out the window all day but experience tells me that one gallon is not enough. You would be shocked if you realized just how much water you really do use. If you count in all the coffee, sodas and other beverages that you drink every day I wouldnt be suprised if that alone exceeds a gallon. The big problem is that peoples bodies are used to being hydrated. You will want more and more. Any sort of event will require work and hard work at that. If you plan on one gallon per day you will get nothing done then eventually die of dehydration.
Perfect example of an extreme situation. I was doing some work in Cathedral City back in June '97. It was pushing 128 during the day and getting down to 110 at night.
That weekend was the grand opening of the California Speedway, on-track temperatures were in the 140s! That was comparable to what I was working in on the streets. Even in the shade, I could not touch my tools by anything but the plastic handles, and the LCD displays on my test equipment were black!
Anyways, I was drinking 5 gallons of iced water every day, in addition to drinks with meals. I was waking up to take a leak at 3am. That was IT! One "pit stop", and it was not clear. I probably should have been drinking double.
This wasn't hard physical work... I was a technical consultant and worked on the final configuration and programming. The hardest thing that I did was install the wiring harnesses into the signal cabinets.- Rich

Ya... wife keeps looking at some of the meals and asking "would you eat that?"
Every day routine? No.
SHTF? Even though they make me gag, I'd figure out a way to choke down bananas if that's all that was available.- Rich

Don't drink your pool water it has things in it that who knows what they'll do to ya, major runs at least.
Cyanuric Acid
Copper Sulfate
Pollutants from the yard
plus for every year you pretty much double all the bad things that are in our drinking water so if your water is 10 years old...Comment

This.
When a fluid changes state, anything in solution must first leave the solution. When sunlight and heat evaporate pool water, EVERYTHING in the water that has a higher boiling point remain behind.
Chlorine is a gas, comes out of solution, and boils out normally, so it does not become more potent, but virtually everything else becomes more concentrated. Cyanuric acid is a biggie, and is why pools need to be replastered every so often (more often for commercial/community pools, due to the higher chlorine/bacterial levels).
You can drain and refill, but unless your pool is fiberglass, the acid level will quickly return.- Rich

Solar still for desalinating if your near the coast you'd probably need one for each person. Doesn't look to hard to make them yourself.Comment

You don't even need the plastic cone.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9fepEyGRx8

All you need is a shovel, a container, a sheet of plastic, and some rocks.
A mylar space blanket is perfect.
If you can dig down to moist soil, you're home free. If not, then you'll have to fill the hole with water. If the soil is too porous or rocky, the water may not remain in the hole. In that case, use an extra space blanket to line the hole.
Tag the blankets so you don't use the bottom piece later as the top piece.Attached FilesLast edited by Cokebottle; 04-25-2011, 10:11 PM.- Rich

Bananna chips are a great emergency food, but I also like Banannas. Better than grasshoppers and grubs (been there done that)...those'll make you gag n' puke the first few times.

In a survival situation you would relegate all activities to the night or coolest hours of the morning. I know that down there it never gets below 90, but the lack of direct/indirect sunlight helps . You need to replace electrolytes in those situations. Drinking all that water, you're diluting your system (but you sound sharp enough to know that).Ditto.

It's amazing that even in desert survival, a solar still can save your life. You can throw vegetation in the hole and produce as much as a quart of water a day.You don't even need the plastic cone.

Bananas will gag me even if I don't know they're bananas.
Dessert at a church pot-luck when I was around 14. Mom brought me some chocolate cake with vanilla frosting. She didn't know the center filling was banana. We both found out after the first bite.
I'm very sensitive to textures. Bananas, refried beans ain't gonna' happen. Heavy/creamy soups aren't going to work well.
Clam chowder, hominy grits, mashed potatoes, even peas aren't a problem... but pea soup ain't happening.- Rich

Absolutely.
That's why I was saying, even with the 50 or so gallons we have available, it wouldn't make it 10 days (and maybe not a week) if SHTF and we had to bug-in during August and had no power for the AC... and that would be even if we didn't participate in ANY activities.- Rich

True enough. Do you have a genny or even a little inverter like a Honda? The 2000 will power a few small "high current" things like a small AC and your refrigerator and burn drops of gas.Absolutely.
