    Dog Supplies (Camping/BOB)

I searched but came up empty. Sorry if this is a repost.

I will be camping next month and also want to put some supplies in my BOB for my dog. He obviously needs food and water, but are there any other supplies you guys bring and use that you normally wouldn't around the house?

He's a two and a half year old beagle. Aside from food/water, I'll toss in some small toys for him and an extra long leash. I was thinking those collapsible dishes for food/water would be good too.

I don't want to bring along a bunch of unnecessary items. Considering I haven't been camping or out for a long time with him away from home I haven't needed anything aside from what we have around the house.

I feel like there is something obvious that I am missing.

I like to take some pig or cow ears. My dogs can sit and chew on them for hours. Helps avoid boredom when they are on the leash.

Dogs are a great addition to any BOB. They provide warmth at night, companionship, camp sanitation services, early warning alarm system, first line of defense and, when need be, food for you. So, you should get a dog for yourself and a dog for your dog.

Betagen Topical Spray so his possible future cuts dont get infected. Better safe than sorry.
I was given a bottle of this stuff when I got my dog neutered and when he had some minor surgery.

You can possibly give dogs Benadryl as well for allergies. I forgot the safe dosage amount for different dog weights but I used to give it to my dog when her face would suddenly get puffy or she would get hives. As always though, discuss this with your vet to see if this is ok for your certain pet.

Benadryl will help keep a dog a bit more comfortable if it gets bitten by a rattlesnake. If camping in a snake area, you might want to get your dog a couple rattlesnake vacines asap. The first time it takes one shot and then a booster in 30 days. Then, the next year, your little pal will only need one booster. It is not a vacine that makes them immune to snake venon but, it'll buy you a little extra time to get to a vet.

Doesnt hurt to know how to do CPR or the Heimlich manuever on your dog either.

I went to the pet expo today in Costa Mesa to see what they had for dogs as far as survival/travel and there was one small booth there for this. I talked to them about what I was after and one of the main things aside from water and food that they recommended was styptic powder. I picked some up on my way home from the expo to throw in his pack. Still need to get some Benedryl.

Thanks for the replies, guys. If there is anything else, please chime in.

I use Advantix for ticks and other bugs. It also works good to keep those dog-eating flies off of my buddy. The flies really tear up his ears in the summer time. My vet advised me to put a drop or two of Advantix on those spots the flies like to chew on. Since I've been doing that, flies and mosquitoes stay away!

So, I'd advise bringing some Advantix along, just in case. And have fun!

As in my previos post, Advantix works good. There's also a citrus-scented bugspray for dogs at walmart or target that you can buy, it seems to work pretty well. However, I don't know what it's called as my girl always buys it and puts it in a spray bottle, so I've never seen the label.

I've also heard off people using Off! bugspray for their dogs. I've heard that stuff works well, but I haven't tried it.

Get yourself a location/tracking collar, just in case that zunofawitch runs away.

Also get some 'Blue Coat' for cuts, wounds, a good lease and collar. Other than that, keep him close and have fun.

Oh yeah maybe some super glue, in case he tears a pad.

Super glue is a good idea. Too many uses to NOT have it in the bag and its small enough to not take up much space.

As for his leash, I ended up getting a large roll of 1" strap a couple years ago after he constantly chewed thru his store bought leashes. Tired of spending the money and being limited by their designs I make his now out of the strap. He can barely chew thru it and if it gets bad I just make another one. I have a carabeaner on each end so I can hook it to my belt and keep my hands free if necessary. Bottom one is threaded to attach securely to his harness without worry of something snagging on the latch and coming loose/off. I keep a few yards of the strap in my bag along with some paracord.

Either frontline or advantix (I prefer frontline) is a must if you're taking your dog through the woods... You put it on ahead of time, and it works for 1 month.

Yeah i'll look into it, its expensive but i'd rather have my dog protected then get ate up with ticks.
