Looking for a vertical shoulder strap mounted knife

In the back of my mind for a few years has been the desire to have a nice vertical-mounted (i.e. blade pointing up) fixed-blade knife delivery system. I'm sure I could make something with zip ties and electrical tape, but I'd rather have something that was rugged than something that was patched together. This it the pack I use http://www.valkyrietactical.com/prod...oducts_id=1579

    Anyone have suggestions?

On my pack I've been using one of these.

Secure enough as I haven't lost it yet.

A more expensive option is something like a Gerber TAC II. I bought one years ago because it had a locking button on the sheath to hold the knife. It was expensive in the 80's.

I have my Ka-Bar Becker Necker BK11 on my shoulder strap and it holds secure even if I yank in it. I'll take a couple photos tonight.

My son is an Airborne soldier. He has a Benchmade Nimravus on his harness. It has been with him for 5 years with over 2 of the years being in combat.

How big of a knife are you looking for? I would suggest something like a Cold Steel Safe Keeper. http://www.coldsteel.com/safe-keeper.html

From my own experiance I have found that shoulder strap mounted knives generally get in the way of everything if they have a blade length over 4-5 inches. They force the shoulder strap to be blocky and uncomfortable on the top of the shoulder or have to be mounted lower and in the way of other gear and not easily useable.

My current go to fixed blade knife is a Tops Anaconda-7b in a custom sheath (Cordura over Kydex) that gets belt mounted. I always have my benchmade in my pocket. I may carry a short machete, kurkuri or meduim hatchet attached to the outside side of my pack.

Many fixed blade knives today can be had with a kydex or cordura sheaths. You can use 550 cord to weave/sew it to your shoulder strap thru the eyelets of the sheath or get a molle sheath for the knife.
Some people will do skanky things for $25, and not all those people are crack whores.

Former Paratrooper myself and that is the same knife I carry. Benchmade can be pricey. My favorite fixed blade that I keep on my pack is the ESEE 5 from Rat Cutlery and they are very well priced blades! Too big to put on a shoulder strap

Keep in mind that because we're in California, a fixed knife must be worn exposed and on the belt. I would love to attach mine to my backpack shoulder strap, but not in this state...

                        What's wrong with a folder?

What's wrong with a good, solid folding knife? Check out the Ka-Bar Mule. I have two; one mounted on my Blackhawk 3-day assault pack, and one mounted on my Blackhawk ACU hunting pack; both mounted on the left pack strap for easy crossdraw access. For extra security you can use duct tape and zip ties for mounting (because Murphy is alive and well). The knife sheath is made by Eagle (who makes great military soft goods), has velcro and snap closures, and can be mounted either vertically on a pack harness (with included velcro straps) or horizontally on your belt (has a belt loop). The knife is a beast. It's a big (9" overall length when open) lock back folder. The lock is solid. I have the half serrated version which makes short work of most tie-down material. The knife grip is zytel with rubber inserts and will give you more grip space than one of those small neck knives. Check out the review and link below. --1911ShooterPhil

I tried looking for a few pics to back up what I am saying but be careful mounting a knife this way. I have heard and seen several pics of several different incidents where the knife has come loose from the sheath and then stabbed the carrier when they bent down for something, fell, etc. These weren't crappy knives with cheap sheathes either, just a thought so you're aware.
