Where can I shoot outdoors near SF (not a range)

    Hi-
I am new to the area and originally from New Mexico. In my home state going "out in the hills" to discharge firearms was common.

Does anyone have any advice on where I could go within a half day's drive to shoot outdoors (not at a range)?
    thanks in advance

Any BLM land. Plenty of places around us in the Bay Area. Up north near Clear Lake, out in the Sierra Mountains, south of Hollister, just to name a few. All within 4 hours driving time. Make sure you check the maps for BLM. Make sure you clean up all your brass and any garbage.

We'll be going to Clear Lake tomorrow to scout out a Camp-N-Shoot site. Use this link as a reference and also the link jedi gave.

That's not correct. Double check with the regions BLM manager before you go. Some areas have restrictions or are closured to shooting (Red Hills in Chinese Camp for one). Then there's the need for Condor friendly ammo within certain hunting zones. PAX

Welcome to the bay. Your days of driving "30 mins out of the city" are long gone by moving here to the bay. Like people mentioned above, everything is minimum 3 hours away(for BLM) unless you know someone with private land. Really f*cking sucks. But it's all we got.

Check the Geocommunicator out. And then call the specific BLM office and see if it is OK to shoot on that specific BLM land.

                  Best of luck

                    Knoxville

The closest place I know is BLM Land called Knoxville, near Lake Berryessa. Some of the land is hunting only, no target practice. Some is open to OHV and shooting. I'm near Martinez, about a 2 hour drive for me.
