How long will a BDSO last?

If a serious BreakDown in Social Order erupted in this country, how long would it take for the govt. to restore order (assuming that a TOTAl catastrophe has not wiped out govt. altogether). Lets say, fergzample, that the dollar gets devalued, the govt. bungles the job and we has hyperinflation in the range of 25% annually. Food riots break out in the cities, spread to smaller communities and then to the countryside. Surely in a case like this the Prez will go to the Congress and get permission (or maybe not!) to declare martial law. I'm think'n 90 days or thereabouts would bring an end to it. Whatta you guys/gals think?

Somewhere between one day and forever, if I had to guess...

If it were countrywide, I would probably say 6 months to a year. But it is really anyone's guess at this point since we are so dependent on technology.

I know they are works of fiction, but read Patriots by James Rawles (the exact scenario in your original post), Lights Out by David Crawford (EMP attack), and One Second After (EMP attack) by William R. Forstchen.

I've joted those titles and authors down, thanks. What do you think of Bob Livingston's book "How To Survive the Collapse of Civilisation". Is he a straight shooter or is he just profiting off the hype?

Question? So the rest of California is OK, right?

The Big One hits next Tuesday morning at peak traffic time. The epicenter near Palm Springs is shallow and shock waves roll Westward, like I once saw in a National Geographic tv show. This 9.0 villain rolls along at a thousand miles per hour and rocks for nearly a minute, wiping out freeways, breaking gas lines, water pipes, electricity. Fires erupt and will rage for days. After the rumbling stops there is mostly silence interrupted by nearby screams and cries from the injured and the hysterical. The I-15 freeway below the Cajon Summit has rifts 20 feet high in several places. Over passes, Southward on the 15 and 215 to Corona, are all on the ground or otherwise impassable as are most overpasses everywhere in the quake’s domain. The Grape Vine stays open but the I-5 is a dead-end road at San Fernando. Mass egress from the region became only a dream in just a few fearful seconds. Still worse, no one can get in by those major arteries either. We are all trapped.

Mayhem quickly becomes the norm and many of our LEO’s and fire heroes are fleeing homeward, on foot. For many of them, as well as for millions of civilians doing the same, it will take days before they arrive and some will join in on the looting as they go. Among the flattened structures are most of the 285 hospital buildings in SoCal that the L.A. Times reported last week are not earth quake proof -- have not yet been retrofitted since the most recent of the devastating earth quakes.

Between the Pacific Ocean and greater Riverside / San Bernardino region nearly 16,000,000 people make their homes. Scads (that's a very large number) of them will be dead within minutes, and countless thousands upon thousands more will be badly injured and large numbers of those will die within days. Disease will spread and even more people around us will become sick and die.

Who will be the Marshal? (Glen Beck, right?) What part(s) of the world will the marshal's posse be camping out in when the devastation manifests? With every airport runway that will land something larger than a Piper Cub wrecked, how will the posse get here? How long Marshal Law will last is a pointless question.
Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity is one of my job functions. What you just described is very nearly the scenario we drill on yearly. The Great Shakeout uses much the same scenario with the epicenter being right near the Salton Sea were there is a fault zone that moves about once every hundred years resulting in a 8+ quake. Its been frozen up for nearly 200 years, so we're overdue.

Only major difference is they also predict the 10 will be unpassable near Palm Springs and the Grapevine artery will be severed near the top of the mountain, but the results are the same. Three of the four major arteries are shut down (don't forget 8 freeway).

They predict that it may take as long as 6 months before water services are restored to all areas and perhaps 2 months before water distribution efforts meet even the minimal needs of everyone still here.

Scariest of all is it is not only possible, it is likely that this will happen in our lifetimes.

This is why California recommends every citizen stock at least a two week supply of water.

My family is well prepared. I work 50 miles from my home, but I ride a large, dual sport motorcycle. Even if all the major roads are blocked and/or closed, I'll still be able to get home to my wife and kids.

Being prepared for something of this scale is not crazy. It is simply being prudent.

Sorry, you cannot get to norcal from your location, the earthquake will eliminate the overpasses in Sacramento, and the bridges over the Sacramento and American Rivers.
