    Stanislaus NF camping

Was looking into taking the family camping in the Stanislaus NF for spring break. Was thinking somewhere around Groveland. Going to take our 26ft trailer. From what I have found out online the campgrounds don't open until the last saturday of April. Looking to do some hiking, and fishing. Anyone know this area or any good locations around Groveland that aren't flooded with people or will be open?

If you were going up Hwy 4 I would say Lake Alpine. But that doesn't help you.

Have you spent much time around Hwy 120. Generally speaking, you're not close to water many places easily acessable with a rig like that. But there is a place on the middle fork of the Tuolume, called Spinning Wheel, that's good if you're self contained like that. It's near Rainbow Pool on the south fork. I'll PM you with the secret location. Other wise Stanislaus Camp off Hwy 4 is better if you're not set on the Groveland area. PAX

            Thanks for the replies.

Are there any places to camp near water that aren't fixed up campgrounds? I was under the impression that you can camp anywhere in the National forest. I am not set around groveland. It was just the first area I read about with camp grounds. I am planning on getting a Stanislaus NF map this week.

No I have only been up that way a couple times. Just trying to find a nice starting off point. With less people, and fish.

It may be pretty tough with all the low elevation snow and the trailer.

Well, from Groveland I would avoid taking Cherry Lake Road. You will never get it up the very narrow roads. Typicaly, trailers come from the north side past Jamestown off 108. It is the Tuolumne exit off 108 that takes you into the NF. But, this road is typicaly closed this time of the year. What direction you coming from?

We will be coming from Tracy. Probably up the 108 from manteca.

If I were you I'd wait until at least June. Example last year on Fathers day I took the family to Lake Alpine for the day. June 20th. There was still snow in piles three to four feet deep. I'm thinking you'll have a much better time lower elevation camping at like Pardee, New Melones, Amador, Hogan, Camanche etc.. Just my opinion after hunting, camping and fishing the SNF since 1978.

My first reaction is NO!!! But, since it's a fellow Calgunner, I guess one more won't hurt.

In all seriousness there are some REALLY great fishing spots there. Sounds like Echo1 is leading you to the right spot(s).

                        Have fun!

We backpack/camp most all year long. In April we start of with a warm up on Angel Island, this year it was on the 12th. With a rig like yours, as long as your tow vehicle is up to it, and you can get in and OUT, the weather should be a non issue. The doing is the point. The only way to determine if a place is campable, is to show up there, then decide if it's ago-or-no-go to fall back on option two. It can rain in the Sierras in any given month of the year. A couple Memorial Days ago, it drizzled off and on all the way to the base camp. When we woke up in the AM, there was snow on the ground. We ate our big meal then aborted. The threat of weather keeps the crowds at bay. I'm in Ripon, not far from you, we'll always take a gamble if the weather is marginal, and have the right gear. I too have been scouring the Central Sierras for a while, about 47 years, but with the price of fuel, you definately don't want to waste a trip.
FYI, the first time I drove myself to Yosemite from Fremont, it took 9 hours and cost $5 in my Bug. $2 to fill up in Fremont, $1 in Oakdale, $1 in Yosemite Valley (gas was expensive there $.33), $1 again in Oakdale. At the surplus store $5 would bailout a case of C-rations. $10 for a weekend in Yosemite. PAX

                            I leave from Dublin myself.

I am headed out to Cherry Lake (in the area) in a week for 3 days. This will be my 3rd trip up there this year. Although, last time we did wake up to 5" of fresh snow. It was fun, but not expected for another day.
