Seriously though, like my father said "If it happens it happens, all of your preperations will give you what? two weeks, if not a year extra to live? So you will spend your entire life preparing for something only to die off a little later than everyone else? there is no point to life son, you live, you die, and it all goes on without barely a hicup. At least i will have lived everyday to its fullest, oh yeah do you have any .30-30 for this weekend?"

I understand being prepared for a minor SHTF episode, 72 hour bags and all that. But the simple answer is that all of your prepardness, worry, and money wasted will do nothing if you get a minor cut and die from lack of antibiotics. just get over it already, the biggest factor in these situations will be luck, unless you move out to remote wilderness and start living off the grid now.

Best of luck to you all
I agree, somewhat. I have used this "prepping" to spend time with my family, to become interested in their hobbies (hunting, fishing, shooting) as I was always the kid into sports, books, and martial arts. It has been a path to bond more with the people I love, and spend more time with them. It does not consume my life.

However, the "all your prepping" statement...I hope that "all my prepping" will last me just long enough for the "s" to get squared away...not a day less. And if it doesn't...it doesn't really matter anyway, does it?

I should give you some more light as to what i was refering too, as my original post wasnt very clear. I do stock up on items i will need if something happened. I have around 4 months of food stores, First aid, Two BOB packs with 72 hour preps in each, and full on camping gear that i would normally take hiking. And that is where i ended it. Some people go way to far into the "im going to buy everything i need to make the world function the same way it did before the collapse" And it is my personal belief that everyone should, like you have done, learn about the land, how to take game, fish, and come back to their "roots" if you will.

And i will tell you what i and my father have based our opinions on. We watched as our friend basically threw his life away preparing for the worst. He literally drives one of those E350 vans everywhere full of guns, food, tents, cots, survival gear, radios, batteries, and even spare routers and switches so he could "restart the internet". He is going absolutly bonkers recently with the market volitility and now this situation in japan, Saying we need to get to his compound ASAP so on and so forth. It is people like that, who take it way too far, and the idea that somehow we are going to maintain some semblance to our old ways in a true TEOTWAKI situation is optimistic at best, and downright sad in truth.

look into how our infastructure is laid out, we have millions of people living where there is no natural food, power, water, and the minute the trucks stop running its game over for them. I think it is very smart to be preppared, and your doing your children a great dead by sharing hobbies with them, and being a TRUE father! I never meant to say that people who sensibly prepare for natural disasters, or civil unrest were silly or dumb, just the ones that carry around 20,000 feet of telephone line so they can "get comms up and running after the big hit"...

And to top it off, this is all IMO

We do so much wilderness camping and wheeling that we are always prepped. We only pack a fraction these days compared to years ago when we hit the camp grounds in the mini van with the kids.

As for gear, make sure you have tried/used what you have. Be organized and don't skimp on gear that you would depend your life on.

My biggest concern will always be fresh water.

You can only haul so much.

Yup! Who the hell am I right?

And woodsman, yes i agree, fresh water does scare the crud out of me in situations like this. You can really only carry so much. I do hope once i graduate university that i can land myself a gig closer to naturally occuring resources, or somewhere that rains more often, washington, idaho, something like that.

I find myself now having come full circle (much like Neill Strauss did in "Emergency!") where I do not have the desire to leave my community. My whole family is here (parents, aunts, uncles, gf, etc). I cannot imagine what my life would be without these people. With that being said, my plans are to (to the best of my ability) ....wait for it....

                stay and help.

                Strange, I know.

We will see SHTF in our lifetimes. You probably won't know when it has happened until you see the effects of it in the rearview mirror. It will probably happen overnight or over a weekend. It is a given that the US dollar will collapse. Here is the proof.

I kind of hate these threads, but I'm going to participate anyway. I would say when oil is driven up enough to start a war, things will go pretty south. Civil uprising of hispanics vs whites could be a good one on our home front, civil uprising of libs vs conservatives would be a possibility. Could be darn near anything and it would end poorly quickly. Who knows, and who cares, but be ready for it when it happens. Earthquake, flood, famine, airborne illness that is widespread, what CAN'T cause a SHTF scenario. Have your guns, (only the few you NEED, have ammo for when bad men come after you, have your proper gear to get necessities and daily living stuff like water filtration, tent or ability to make a proper shelter. Get food/water/books regarding such things and learn a lot from them. Be ready, and hope for the best.

This is a frightening yet not unfamiliar looking graph.

Population and oil consumption are a few others that look similar.

The data suggests that we are going to crash hard at some not to distant point.

The situation with the devaluation of the dollar is critical. If the Fed. and Prez. can finess a smoothe deval. of the $ then social unrest will be modulated and spread out. If they bungle the job (would government officials ever DO such a thing?) and we get into a hyperinflation thing then social unrest will erupt quickly and a BDSO (BreakDown of Social Order) will occur for sure and spread from the cities to the country side. If that happens then all the supplies, etc. we've discussed here will be sorely needed.
Things usually turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out.

Not going to lie sometimes I reasearch things I would need but can not afford find. Places close by that have them for example. I know a wearhouse nearby that ships alot of ammo and camping gear also several hole in wall. Locatioons were I can find. Guns most people would overlook
