    D Cell batteries...? Help!

I am looking for the best place with the best price to purchase a decent amount of these to stock up for my maglights.

    Any suggestions?

The best price I have found so far is still 75cents per battery which seems high.

Also... Why can't I find any lithium D cell batteries? The AA & AAA lithium batteries are awesome & last about 6-8 times as long as an alkaline battery...

This isn't what you are asking, but check these out:

Use AA and AAA Batteries as C and D Batteries

Over time I've tried to get rid of all my devices that use C or D batteries and replace them with ones that use AA/AAA (or run directly off of 12V). In case I still have something rattling around that uses C or D batteries, I have several of those blue adapter sets. The run time obviously won't be the same since the AA/AAA batteries have less capacity, but they will work.

          And the answer is...........

Sanyo Eneloop AA Rechargeable Battery "D" Spacer Kit

          +

          Product Highlights

AA Batteries used as "D" Batteries
Ready to Use Right Out of the Package
          Low Self Discharge
          Operates at High Voltage Levels
          No Memory Effect
          1000 Charges Life Cycle
          2000mAh

This Sanyo Eneloop AA Rechargeable Battery "D" Spacer Kit includes 2 AA batteries and 2 "D" battery spacers. Just plug the Eneloop AA battery into the spacer and you can use it in equipment that requires a "D" cell battery. Of course, the spacers only adapt the mechanical dimensions of the Eneloop (length and diameter) and not its electrical characteristics. The voltage and the capacity remain unchanged from the Eneloop AA specification.

Sanyo Eneloop AA Rechargeable NiMH Batteries combine the advantages of disposable batteries along with the advantages of rechargeable batteries. Because the batteries have a low-self discharge, the batteries are shipped charged, and ready to use. The low self-discharge design allows you to store the Eneloop batteries for months, and they will still provide almost full capacity and performance. Even after being stored for 1 year, the battery holds 85% of its charge. When charging the batteries there isn't any memory effect, so you get a full charge every time. The batteries have a life cycle of around a 1000 charges.

One of the main features of Eneloop batteries is that they operate at higher voltage levels. Many applications switch off or show the low battery signal if the voltage is lower than 1.1V. A traditional NiMh battery will lose its voltage at this critical level. Eneloop batteries, however, will keep the voltage level over 1.1V for a long time. That is why Eneloop batteries last longer than a standard 2700 mAh battery.

I would just get rid of the maglites altogether, maybe keep one for nostalgic reasons. There are just so many better options out there that run on smaller primaries or rechargeable batteries.

I know the maglites aren't the greatest SHTF flashlight but the large LED ones that I have for the car & apt. are often taken on walks & useful as a weapon if needed.

I do need to get a small efficient SHTF light tho...

I've never used or looked into the AA/AAA->D battery conversion devices, they look very cool!

Yep, good stuff here. I have these in a 6 cell maglite that I converted to a high power bulb...I have yet to need to charge them.

Good information here. I find that stores (Home Depot etc.) seem to have huge battery sales right around the Xmas holidays (for toys etc.), so I generally stock up then.

I've been considering a Pelican 8060 light for SHTF. It has a 8 hour run time on it's internal rechargeable battery. But the nice thing is if you need to, you can drop in some C batteries and get 8 more hours of run time. This is a super bright LED light.

D cells have about 5 times the capacity of AA, and 10 times the capacity of AAA.

D cells are a MUCH better value on a $$ per watt basis.

I freaking hate AAA's. Their "energy per dollar" ratio is ridiculous...
