Backpack/CC Ski as far into J Muir or A Adams Wilderness for at least 6 miles or more from trailhead and enjoy.

Yup, lots of good places to camp. I'm partial to the Eastern Sierra (Lone Pine through Bishop) region.

                  go to reserveamerica.com and parks.ca.gov

those will give you most all spots along with info on what the camping site has/provides so you can tailor your camping to car/motorhome/tent etc

My trip of choice is to backpack to jordan hot springs in the golden trout wilderness..pretty easy hike in..all downhill..about 5 miles...Coming out it can be a butt kicker if you are out of shape, but atleast at the end of your trip you are light coming out. Can be done as an overnight without a problem. I have spent a full week there several times. My next plan is to do the same trail and head out for 3 more miles to Hells hole...maybe one day.

Go way out into the wilderness, find a nice lodge and check in---this is how I've been doing it lately---suits the wife just fine as well.

20 acres, 3 miles up a dirt road. But, I've camped in many different parts of the state.

Big Sir on the coast there is a small family run campground tucked in the pines. It's called RIverside Campground. They are right on the river & they have all types of campsites. Close to lot's of sightseeing and Big Sir Nation Park. Tons of trails from the mountains to the coast lots to do! Also great for dogs and kids..

Kennedy Meadows, Troy Meadows are nice places, if you go during Trout season there is some pretty good fishing in the creeks and or the forks of the Kern river.
