    Bug out shipping container

One of my customers owns a shipping container company. They have about 9,000 containers on two lots. Many of the containers are insulated. Yesterday we were talking and I said he should make a survival container and he thought it was a great idea. Im going over there in a few days to discuss the final version of my idea. I would like to get some input from you guys for such a project. His company is local in Socal and we might give tours of the final product. I will post a Youtube when it is completed.

I found a Youtube of a converted container and the person did a great job. Have a look at what we will be making.

    Suggestions, ideas, input?

I have a friend who put 3 of these Conex boxes down under ground with 2 on the bottom 1 on top of that. Then he put 2 more on top of the dirt as a double wide exposed. That is the main part of the can. It has the kitchen, living room w wood burning stove, and a bath. The botom 2 levels are rooms and 1 more bathroom with a shower. It is the coolest mountain hunting lodge I have ever seen. He had a ton of supports put in to protect it from dirt crush. But it's fully ready to survive in if needed.

    So I say, GREAT IDEA!!

I've been dreaming about doing something like this, but like many, I lack the funds or the BOL to do something with. There's a container lot just down the street that I pass by all the time and I think about how sweet it would be. Great minds think alike...

Not to split hairs, but wouldn't this be a "bug in shipping container" rather than a "bug out shipping container"?

Me, I'm a bug in kinda guy, after all, that's where all my supplies, guns, ammo, food and water are.

Jack Spirko of "The Survive Podcast " had a Guy on recently that specialized in construction of That type. It was on episode 560 back in November. The shows are all available on iTunes or at
Today on The Survival Podcast we discuss shipping container construction including burying a container to create an underground shelter or storage facility.

Check out his archives. He puts out a damn good and very diverse podcast.

I really like this, and was contemplating getting a plot of land out in BFE somewhere to stick this on. Your friend would be up along for some competition in this area as there is another company doing the same thing (the canadian site has better pictures):

They took the pricing off thier page, but when they started it was listed to go for around $21,000 (canadian).

If your friend can keep pace with that pricing or cheaper, they might have a hit on thier hands. If they cant do that then maybe build them specifically for a bugout/in scenario /SHTF shelter and price accordingly.

I think they are great for above ground. An area where I go hunting, I came across one that is made into a retreat. It is (2) 40' on bottom and (2) on top with a peaked roof.
For underground, not a big fan. I think it would be too much work to make a base, sides, and top that can withstand the weight. If one has the resources, especially free or cheap containers, then the extra work would be worth it.
For underground, I would use culvert pipe. They are designed to be buried, and one that is 120", once a floor is built, there would be sufficient space under the floor for 55gal barrels.
For above ground though, they are cool! I've been wanting to build a retreat out of containers for a long time, just don't have the connections to get them cheap enough.

What a great idea for Mother In Law quarters. Every night lock her up snug as a bug in a rug or anytime she gets irritating.

With the right marketing you should make a tidy sum. Good Luck!

This site has been very informative as to what people are actually building out of the "cans". Some are VERY impressive.

a buddy and i have brainstormed about some things to do with containers for long-term storage. we'd talked about carving out part of a hill and laying a cement slab down for drainage and to keep everything level. the containers would be set down there and covered in a hefty layer of tar, epoxy, or other water-resistant sealer before being buried, with or without an exposed entrance.
