    California City Chaos

    OK..

so this past weekend a friend and myself went to California City where we have ALWAYS gone to go shooting high powered rifles and what not, we usually head back pretty deep in to the desert outside CA (down main street, left turn at the golf course, and take that road until it ends and keep going..) but this past weekend as we were out shooting (with NOBODY around us) we were approached by rangers who told us that we could not be shooting in the area, saying that it is incorporated and no firearm use is permitted. The question is, where can I go to shoot...? I have lots of guns and love to go out there and go shooting but I do not want to run the risk of getting caught or having something happen, please tell me where I can go shooting in the area.

Thanks, love the site, first time posting but the forums have helped me in the past.

Depends where your coming from, but I have a place about 30 minutes from Cal City. East on 58. 2 concrete tables under a Joshua tree, marked off with metal stakes out to 400 yards. Never had a problem there. There a guy in town that builds high dollar big caliber rifles and that is where he test them. Let me know next time your headed out and if I'm around I'll show you the place.

There's also a pretty nice outdoor range up by tehachapi. Membership fees are pretty reasonable if I remember correctly.

I'm coming from the San Fernando Valley area, in the past I never had a problem and we shoot high power rifles but this time it just wasn't in the cards, what scared me the most is that they said they could take our weapons and fine us.

We do it every couple months I'll definitely post definitely next time we go out there, the more the marrier..

You should be able find a legal shooting MAP for LA county like the one that is available for San Bernardino county.

get some BLM maps and go there. You can also check to see if that property you like to shoot on is actually incorperated.

What most people don't understand about Cal City is that actual land wise it is HUGE. I believe it is the biggest city in California land wise, even though actual building, homes and population is tiny. They have streets and water mains that run miles out into the middle of the desert.

The main reason you probably were bothered though was because of all the dirt bike/off roaders out there. My buddy is an EMT out there and he said the population goes from the 8,000 residents to 200,000 on weekends like this. They are literally scattered all over the desert out there. I lived there for a couple of years, a few years ago, and it used to take me an extra hour to get home on Fridays, before they opened the 14/395 up.
Next time you come this way, stop in the ranger store deal off of ave k and 15th west in Lancaster, and pick up a set of off road maps, they show you where all the BLM land is. Most places in kern county are are cool as long as you are away from structures and roads, and out of city limits. I used to go to rattlesnake alot which is just outside Rosamond, but I havnt been there in awhile, last time I went it was packed with shooters and completely trashed, I wonder if it's still open. Next time you come out shoot me a PM I'll make sure you have at least a couple of options.
