How many are sick and tired of paying for this POS? this thing was to be a two or three year deal to bump $$$ for the state and here it is still getting more revenue then ever expected. How many have seen any improvements at their local campgrounds.ie: roads, tables, fire pit's,crappers, water access. As I see it so far from the 20-30- campgrounds I have visited all I see is new trucks for the Rangers. One camp has received tables and crappers but this one is in the MNP. what have you seen or what do you know? just asking. I have stoped participating in this rip-off.

I heard the program doesn't make much money due to administrative costs. The first few years it was implemented it was a money-loser (according to a guy I talked to who was involved). I think all the money goes to the US Forest Service (not the state), so if they don't run the campgrounds you are referring to, they are not to blame.Last edited by ChaparralCommando; 01-18-2011, 6:32 PM. -
Once upon a time when Toby was a little boy, the U.S Forest Service, and our national forests, were fully funded by timber sales. The population was vastly smaller then, houses resembled shoes boxes in comparison to what they have become in today's world and consequently, harvestable timber was much more abundant and the Forest Service paid its bills without help from Congress, or Toby. Then, as Toby was growing up tree huggers came along and burned down all the trees. Things change.
Toby, if you really need a "crapper" when you're out and about, might I suggest that you take a shovel with you or, since from experience you probably know that you will need a "crapper", use the one where ever it is that you live before you leave home. Toxicodendron diversilobum is a plant with nice, palmate leaf clusters that work well for wiping. Try it. We used to have to chop a lot of that down when I was with the Dalton Hotshots and I am sure that Hotshots every where still do so.
Same goes for a table -- take one that folds up. Should you need access to water when you're in the woods, then you should have thought about that before you left home and brought some with you. I'm assuming here that you are thirsty and not needing to bathe but my assumption could be very incorrect though.
I am surprised to find a liberal person posting here who thinks that everything is supposed to be free and the government is supposed to provide everything he wants. I gladly pay for my Adventure Pass. If you really visit 20-30 campgrounds in a year, you get a deal. If, on the other hand you visit 20-30 campgrounds in one or two weekends then,... maybe someone should check crime stats in campgrounds. I guess the rest of us could pay more taxes so that Toby can find a "crapper" when he needs one. Maybe problemchild will pitch in a bar of silver to help out. Naw, I don't think so. Toby, cough up the dough.
Here's a statistic about trees: In the late 1800s the average Sierra Nevada forest held 66 "pine" trees per acre with 22 of those being classed as large. Today, that same acre holds from 460 to 1200 trees per acre, averaged. Not more than sticks, really. All those trees crowded together like that are not worth much, and the they burn hot and fast. Natural fires allow a forest to thin itself. Now, everyone go out and thank a tree hugger.Comment

No improvements at all in the Santa Lucia Ranger District portion of the Los Padres National Forest. Nothing but a money grab from day one.

Yeah, I think most of us here would be okay with logging and some burning in order to keep things the way that they have always been with nature, i.e. cyclical. This isn't some PETA or bunnyhugger site where people think that the way things are right this second in any given forest are the way they've always been.
The bad thing about the stupid *** adventure pass is that it was supposed to be for a couple of years, but like with every other "temporary" tax it just doesn't go away, ever.Originally posted by freakshow10mmIf you are mad as hell and aren't going to take it anymore, grab your rifle and head outside. It's a tax. And I'm over taxed already. We go up to Big Bear a couple of times a year...take the kids out on the fireroads...and I have to buy one of these? Just to drive on the dirt roads? It's not right.Comment

The Adventure Pass is only needed if you are parked in a developed area - not just driving through. This is what I was told by two rangers that I spoke to last year when I was headed in to quail hunt. Like most "additional expenses" related to the outdoors here in CA, like the green sticker for offroad and the Gamebird Heritage Stamp, the $$$ is earmarked funds but not dedicated funds. Therefore, subject to raids by the general fund!!Comment

Yes, you are correct. If we don't stop....then we could bypass the pass.Comment

No improvements, none.

You ONLY have to buy that pass for a "HIGH IMPACT" "IMPROVED" area and NO other. I park all the time along the roads and never get a ticket.
They wont tell you that info.
A listing of the HIRAs (High Impact Recreation Areas) is located below. Use these “quick links” to go directly to the HIRA list for a particular National Fores
Even if they have the sign it does not mean the WHOLE area. Best way to find out is stop by the ranger shack and ask what areas are NOT included.
Fee Areas
The Forest Service has reduced the area in Southern California where the Adventure Pass is required. The changes are the result of the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (REA), which was passed in December 2004 as part of the 2005 Consolidated Appropriations Act.
REA allows the Forest Service to charge fees for specific sites, and for heavily impacted recreation areas that have specific amenities, including toilets, parking, trash receptacles, picnic tables, interpretation, and security.
No building NO FEE!
DO NOT park near a trash can or any other BS improvement.Last edited by problemchild; 01-19-2011, 12:40 AM.Comment

F this State and their pick pocket fees, when you look at how much of the actual roads you can use to even enjoy to justify the cost, it becomes clear this is a ripoff of the highest order. If we the paying public were actually getting something for our effort and money, it MIGHT be worth it, but we aren't getting any more than before, in fact we get less. There are more road closures and restrictive access than ever before.
In addition, these are public lands, they are wild, and we should not have to pay to drive our vehicle in to enjoy them, anymore than the roads should be blocked off and closed so they cannot be used.
The system has become inundated with the Sierra Club dipsh*ts and environmentalist egghead, militant, douche bags who don't want any recreational use by vehicle or hunters into the wilderness."If Congress can do whatever in their discretion can be done by money, and will promote the General Welfare, the Government is no longer a limited one, possessing enumerated powers, but an indefinite one, subject to particular exceptions."
