    Solar source EMP?

Think it is possible to have a solar emp that could toast us?

EMP wouldn't toast us, but the accompanying rads+heat would.

What are the different sources of EMP? What does EMP stand for?

          Electromagnetic pulse

It can come from any large discharge of energy(explosion, usually nuke) or fluctuating magnetic field.
There are weapons too, not sure of real-world applications though.

The US & Russia did EMP experiments in the early 60s. The US detonated a nuke ~ 800 miles from Hawaii. The experiment was Starfish Prime and it knocked out burgler alarms and lights in Hawaii. (Remember this was the 60s – no computers, cell phones etc.) The Russian test knocked out stuff underground (in concrete bunkers). One nuke detonated over Wisconsin at sufficient altitude could take out all electronic devices in the US. BTW - it's real and is easier to do than hitting a city with a nuke (no need for targeting - just shot it up and let an altimeter detonate the nuke).

According to those that are in the know, the year 2012 is supposed to be the year of extreme solar flares. The sun emits these uber-flares ever so many years and 2012 is supposed to be a bad year.

              Google: Quebec solar flare

On March 13, 1989, Quebec was hit by a solar flare that knocked out their electrical grid. I wouldn't be too worried about EMP's, rather, I would be more worried about extreme solar flares.

There is plenty of information out there on how to prepare yourself for such an event. As for an EMP, when the evil one wants to do it, well, you don't have a clue when it will happen. At least with a solar flare, astronomers are watching all the time and there is at least some warning.

              EMP!!!!
See, I just pulsed you. You weren't even ready.

Just keep checking this page, we have already had a couple near misses this year. Solar cycle 24 is spinning up big time, http://www.spaceweather.com/

An EMP from the sun (caused by a CME) would cause more damage than a nuke induced EMP. It has happend before, and is going to happen again. Last time it just knocked out some telegraph lines, but that was in the 1870s+/-, if it happens today, we are so hosed.

You have to also keep in mind that that Canadian Shield as a land mass is not very conductive like the soil we have down here. Because of that, Canada's power lines frequently develop voltage imbalances during solar flares that have resulted in taking down the grid. While the US on a whole is not setup for weapon grade EMP, it is not nearly as stressed because grounding/ground conduction is a lot more forgiving here. Plus, its not Canada :-P
