Hiking Between Sacramento and Reno (with 2 year old)

Okay, this weekend I'm taking my wife and two boys to Reno. I did want to do hike that they could handle that was more of a deep woods hike (meaning lot of tall trees...like the Redwoods hike I did in Santa Cruz). Is there anywhere between Sac and Reno where one could just park their vehicle and hike a mile into deep trees, nice views, etc. Preferably in the higher elevation areas so it isn't as hot as it is here in Sacramento.

I'm not a native to the area. I'm originally from Hawaii. Thanks!

Got a perfect spot for you- not too far off Hwy 80.

Do a google for Loney Meadows or Grouse Lakes or Lindsey Lakes. There is a loop around Loney Meadows that crosses a stream and encircles the meadow. A couple of cows graze there. Takes you through some big trees, mainly level walking area. You can see some gigantic stumps from logging "old growth" back when it existed. I'm sure you'll be alone too. If you get adventurous, take the turn to go to Bullpen Lake.

    Check this out: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/tahoe/docume.../grousemap.pdf

The map shows its location off 80 at the 20 turn off. It's probably 20-30 minutes off the Hwy. The last mile or two is dirt road, not to rough- I've driven a car on it.

Oh yeah- right off the 20 turn off into 18 is the Sierra Discovery Trail- it is a very short loop, owned by PG&E. A much shorter option than above- but could be just what you are looking for.
On the firing line- depending on the day, determines which side of the line I'm supposed to stand on!

OMG Hooligan....you rock. I was looking for this kind of detail. I did searches but since I don't have enough time to scout it out before this weekend was hoping I'd get excellent feedback like this.

Sounds like I'll try this one out. Also, I am making it a point to get out there with my older son and be able to have details like this on other areas.

      Very much appreciated!

So we decided on Sierra Discovery Trail. I'm glad we did because the wifey and kids were complaining!!! OMG....lol. It was a very nice trail though to get away from Sacramento. I know now that my next hike is going to be much harder and with a group of people that like the outdoorsy stuff.

Thanks again for the tip! It was short so the wifey and kids urged me to get in the car and head to Reno! Hotel room at Circus Circus was much more enjoyable to them.

Horse Tail Falls off Hwy 50, park at Twin Bridges. Very short walk, all up, massive cascade.
