semi-serrated blades

Do you like semi-serrated blades? If so what, specificly, do you use the serrated portion for? Have a SOG seal pup, and the serrated part just seems to get in my way.

both parts work well to cut. it depends what you cut as well. if you need a clean precise cut, i push cut w/ the plain edge. if it doesn't matter if it needs to be precise i will use the serrated edge almost all of the time (paracord, rope, cloth). i do this because the more you use your plain blade for push cuts, the more necessary it is for the plain edge to have a "razor polished" edge, which leads to more sharpening and honing.

i'm lazy so i like having a partially serrated edge, and i only need to sharpen the serrated edges 1:4 times compared to the plain edge.

I agree, unless you're cutting a lot of cord seems pretty lame to me.

I use the serrated portion to strip wire.... either "ring" it or "pencil shave".

Serrated is also very handy for sharpening pencils... or in a survival situation, sharpening a spear point.

For myself I find that the serrated portion digs/gouges the wood to much when shaving tinder or sharpening a spear point. (could just be my technique) The more I think about it, I think I just prefer a clean cut. I use a plain edge even when cutting cord.

I prefer plain edges for just about everything (excluding kitchen uses.) I wont buy a knife if it has a serrated edge. I like sharpening them, and I have no way of sharpening serrated knives.

I like plain edges. Properly sharp, they'll cut most anything a serrated will and do it cleaner, plus they'll nicely cut a lot of things serrateds do a poor job on. I think they look better too.

In the end, it's a personal preference thing.

Serrated edges look cool and that's what I got when I was younger..

But once I started actually using my knives.. they're now all non-serrated. Keep them sharp and they'll cut everything you need them to.

yep serrated blades have their place but i do not for see much cutting of bread with my bowie knife

I carry knives for edc instead of survival/camping, but if I can't cut something with a plain edge knife, I should be using a saw instead. I've found over the years that a properly sharp plain edge is superior.

I have a nice Buck Ecco. It has two blades. One with a regular blade, and the other with a half serrated blade. The serrated blade also has a nice drop point which gives it an exacto knife/razor blade kind of cutting ability. This is my EDC knife. I do use the plain edge much more that the serrated, but the serrated edge has seen use.

Spoken like a true novice......Semi serrated blades give the best of both worlds. I prefer a sharp clean blade but a serrated blade is superior in cutting lines and belts. We did extensive testing of different knives in Rescue and to my chagrin, the serrated blades are just better. They are more difficult to sharpen and if you are not careful you will not get the sharpness of the original serration back. I do not carry serrated blades for hunting or a general use knife but there are places they are better.

The only serrated blade that I have purchased is a Spyderco Rescue. For other uses a properly sharpened plain edge will be fine. Plus they just look better
