wanted ex or active Force Recon or Ranger, SF military

this is the big problem for us hunters that want to get out to remote areas of *our* public lands http://www.dailynews.com/news/ci_14495133?source=rss

I am interested in putting together a land based reconissance class taught by an experienced recon soldier for the purposes of hunter safety. If there are any skilled persons that could teach a class on this please PM me. Seeking professional trained recon person. I am sure we could get many hunters to take the class as this is becomming a common problem for us.

depending on location, i'd definitely consider a class to enhance my fieldcraft- especially since i'm planning a lost coast camping trip soon.....

I'd be interested in a class like that too.

With respect, what exactly do you think an ex-Recce soldier could teach you that would be useful?

It sounds more like Land Navigation than reconnaissance to me. In this era of GPS and computers, that should be the shortcut for most folks, however learning how to effectively use a lensatic compass, protractor and map are very good skills to have.

What location would this course be at? I'm near the sierras Calaveras county. I would be EXTREMELY interested in a class like this. Maybe some Land Nav/getting out of hairy situations alive.

Hey, if you would like to put on some clinics with what you have learned, and they are down this way, I would attend.

Without knowing what exactly you are trying to accomplish I'd like to interject that you may not need to be exclusive to Force Recon. There's many grunts who went on JTF's that have quite a bit of experience on public lands assisting LEO's with locating drugs.

I participated on one in the mountains north of Ventura where we located a field and assisted in gathering photos for evidence. The bust turned in to a low street value of $20 mil.

Might even want to ask if there is any of the team members from NG Counter Drug in Sac on this board. Right up their alley. Also any 19D with operational experience. Don't forget any 11B4 that have operated in capacity.

REI offers land navigation classes using both compass & GPS.

One of the potential problems with a Land Nav class is getting good maps of the area you want to work with. You need a good, reliable scale to work with and civilian maps tend to be problematic in that area. Compasses tend to be about $50 each and protractors can be found online. Teaching the class could be done in a day but a weekend would be best (day and night portions). But more than anything, this kind of class requires a lot of prep work, finding and marking suitable points and setting up bounds.

The subjects you'd want to learn:

                          - Reading/Orienting the map
                          - Terrain Features
                          - Scale
                          - Measuring Distance with a Protractor
                          - Shooting an Azimuth
                          - Grid/Magnetic Conversion
                          - Declination Diagram
                          - Terrain Association
                          - Dead Reckoning
                          - Pace Count
                          - Back Azimuth
                          - Triangulation
                          - Resection

The area around Lytle Creek is a good location for training for SoCal folks

I'm in the area and would be interested in this type of thing, but would prefer a focus toward animal tracking/man tracking, situation awareness in wilderness environments, general survival (with minimum gear) and evasion techniques.

I've got a Marine Scout Sniper. PM me if you think you could use him, with his expected rate and i'll let him know about it.
