So after the craigslist person flaked on me I did some research and found that "Rubbermaid Brute" trash cans are food grade plastic, and they have tight snap on lids.

At $60 (for 2 35 gallon) they beat the heck out of $100 each (55 gal) water storage bins.

    Thanks for the idea five.five-six.

if you can keep them completely full and "air tight", and make sure that absolutely no light gets in you wont need to worry about changing the water. So fill them up 100% with purified water and make sure they are covered with dark material and you'll be good.

also, it may sound crazy, but call CalTrans and ask where the best place to get them would be. They'll know and they might have some extras they can sell you.

I haven't tried this but it's a thought. Plumb your house water supply through the barrel. Everytime you turn on the water it replaces the water in the barrel kind of like your water heater.

If you plumbed the house water supply through a plastic barrel, it would be subjected to the incoming water pressure. A big barrel will burst at about 80-100 psi.

Plus, no plumbing code would allow a plastic barrel. It would have to be a stamped ASME pressure vessel.

Aside from that, a wide spot in the line coming into your house would encourage bacterial growth.

                    water storage

Try your local RV salvage yard. Walt's RV in Fontana has tanks. Also, call Inca Plastics in Ontario. 909 923 3235. They made tanks for Fleetwood, Alfa, Thor, Lazy Days, Weekend Warrior,... and probably have other styles as well but if you can get the RV left overs at a better price, why pay retail?

I had the same dilemma in that I wanted a few 55 gallon water barrels, but the cost of shipping was as much as the barrels themselves. I also didn't want used food grade barrels because water is so important, I didn't want to open one up after an earthquake and find water that tastes like tomato soup.

I finally found a guy outside of Danville who had purchased a huge number of new 55 gallon water barrels for his church, but ended up with an excess. I bought a couple of barrels, water preserver, a pump and a bung wrench from him. Everything is of excellent quality and I'm super happy with them.

I just pinged him and he said that he sold out of the first lot, but should have another shipment in 4 - 5 weeks. His email address is boe_bryan AT yahoo.com.

Edit: I think I bought mine for $50 per barrel plus whatever the cost for the pump, bung wrench and preserver.

Samson Stacker 5 gallon - they are blue and easily stacked

You can get them from RIOS Industries Inc.

This is the place I got them, the 5 gallons is a good addition to the the 30 or 55Gals. You can carry and move them around easier than a 55 gallon. If you need to refill it is easier to refill 5 gallons compared to a 55 gallon especially if there is distance to the water source.

If I am not mistaken it is around $12 a piece. I bought at least 60 for my family and 3 other freinds. It's cheaper that way.

Give them a call, they have the 30 and 50 gallons as well. I have those but the 5-6 gallons to me make a lot more sense for portability. When you bug out it is easier to move 6 gallon containers compare to a 30 or 50 gallon. besides it it's easier to hide as well due to size.

                              These are brand new!!!!
