Quick and easy portable shade?

With Steele Peak (apparently) closed, it looks like I have to head out past Indio to do some non-regulated shooting.

It being a little warm in Indio this time of year, I'm going to need some shade. I've got an EZ Up, but it's heavy and actually not all that easy to put up--especially for one guy.

Anybody know of portable shade that's lightweight and quick to put up?

I have an EZ Up 10x10 and I put it up and down one person with no problems. I lift up one leg at a time raise one notch at a time. I usually also have a pole or stick with me just in case to push up the dome part all the way up if needed.

Nylon tarp, some landscape poles, some stakes, and some rope will do it. You can tie one side off to a vehicle and use two poles or go completely free standing and use 4 poles. This is what folks did before EZUp came along.

I don't like the weight of steel frame ez ups. I want the aluminum framed ones.

Perhaps you can get creative with a golf umbrella and holder?

If you have a roof rack these are awesome. Use mine all the time on my Xterra when I go shooting out in the desert. Sets up in a couple of mins.

I have 2 EZ ups that are 10x10 and light weight. I put them up solo in a few mins. With 2 people that time is cut in half. Got them for free so that's what I use...

Agreed. I have two EZ ups. Used to be what I used when shooting in the desert........but it gets windy in the desert in the afternoons and it was a issue. Too much time between setting them up and staking them down properly in the super hard dirt.

The car awning I linked earlier is perfect for me as it's already attached to the truck at two points and I only have to stake it down on the other two and only if it gets windy. I can deploy it and stake it in under 5 mins.

One thing I like to do to the EZ-UP is drill an extra hole in the legs for partial extension. I make it just high enough to sit in a chair with out hitting your head. Helps with the shade footprint and with wind. Still need to tie it off to a cooler or something. In the 100+ deg N. CA heat we don't go anywhere with out one.
