I was surprised there weren't as many people as I though would be for gold panning/hunting.

In my area, the water is still too fast/high for most folks' comfort.

I'm planning a trip to the North Fork of the Mokelumne in July. I'd appreciate any info regarding the area, especially whether you guys found something there or not...

You can always find gold in the Moke. I haven't been up there this year, but have had luck in the past.

What's the usual form you found there?

There's a spot off 49 just outside of Angel's Camp that is now private property where I've found a dwt or two, all dust. I know some folks who have found nugs and get a lot of flake up higher on one of the tributaries, but wouldn't tell me where. Every body of water that crosses hwy 49 has gold in it. Too bad it's illegal to pan underneath the bridges and culverts because those are some of the best places to find gold.

I know a fella who used his "culvert skimmings" to launch his real estate empire back in the 60's.

No wonder... there is a lode claim and a mill claim near Meadow Lake.

Pssssssst..... Want a tip on gold? Try and find the old outhouses on these mines I do have a detector, never got around to learning about it yet. Spring run off is correct. I Have friends who use wetsuits. Have seen some very impressive nuggets. I don't ask where they go because it's income for them. If this thread lives will try and get some pics of their finds. One guy found a rudely made ring, tiss really cool. Crap I really don't need another addiction...

It is by far an expensive hobby but the chances of it paying itself off are far better than shooting or hunting in my opinion.

The vial on the left I panned out of several of those "gold-bearing dirt" bags I bought from a vendor in Quartzite, AZ, years ago.

The vial on the right contains some small flakes I dug out and panned myself, from a creek somewhere around Angels Camp. That was also years ago (even before the vial on the left). I don't remember the exact location because I went with a work-buddy who panned as a hobby, and I wasn't really interested at the time, so I wasn't paying attention to how we got there (he was driving).

We own a cabin up in Arnold now, about a half hour from Angels Camp, and go up there on weekends, every month or two. If anybody knows a public-accessible spot to go and try a little panning, I'd appreciate it. Even if it's just a general description. I don't expect you to give up your favorite spot or anything.
