Safe to camp on BLM desert land in SoCal?

Hi all, if I drive out to the desert where I shoot, is it safe to camp there? Safe as in... it looks like it gets pretty wild out there based on the leftovers (exploded shot propane tanks, bon fire rings, shells everywhere, tire tracks everywhere) so I wouldn't want to camp and get ran over or shot or something.

    Don't camp where people shoot.

Find a sheltered area far from the popular shooting spot.

It seems like the whole place is a popular shooting spot... better not camp there. There are little canyons that offer protection from bullets, but not drunken off-roaders who might be looking for trouble late at night.

I used to do it in a spot outside of Barstow. It sounds like you and I might be describing a same or similar spot because I would describe my spot just like you did. Exploded propane tanks, "little canyons", fire rings, etc.

We started encountering more and more creepy **** so we stopped camping overnight out there. Day trips only.

Same stuff. Casings everwhere, exploded tanks, fire rings filled with burned computer parts, burned car seats, used fireworks etc. and tire marks all over the place. Looks like it gets wild at night time. I would be camping solo.

I normally backpack solo way out in solitude, not in a place with blown up burned stuff and shell casings all over the place.

Why on earth would you want to camp at a junkyard?

If you are talking Hodge Road, camp on the east side of the freeway. Drive away from the shooting area to set up camp. Or, after shooting, drive towards Barstow and exit at outlet center. There is a large area there for camping. You will still need to put up with us drunk 4 wheelers out looking for trouble, but shooting is prohibited.

Thanks!! I don't mind drunk 4 wheelers as long as you don't run over my critical parts. I was really more concerned with drunken armed people shooting at propane tanks that were tossed into a bonfire, but maybe most people are nice patriots that are just out there to have fun.

No just a couple of the same spots. We usually go with others in family as well so we also have a decent group.

It's on my list! I'm planning a trip to White Sands and Carlsbad Caverns, and I want to stop at lots of places along the way, one of which is your place for some fully auto action!
