Bald Mountain (Shaver Lake) Wheelin' Weekend

For a change of pace from weekends in desert locations my club did a run to the Shaver Lake area last weekend.
Unfortunately Bald Mtn was the only major trail open, who would have thought that in late July?

We were joined on Saturday by a local club from Clovis, the Rebel 4x4 Wheelers. Jesse, the president of the Rebels knew the trails and fun obstacles like the back of his hand, which was nice rather than us fumbling our way around in the back country.

Early Thursday morning I couldn't find Remy in any of her usual sleeping places. Finally I found her sleeping in front of the front door, which she never does. After watching me prep the moho and Jeep for three days she was going to make darn sure I didn't get out of the house without taking her!

I stopped at Shaver Lake so Remy could swim a bit before continuing up the mountain to our base camp.

A pleasant surprise when I arrived at out base camp, a massive amount of firewood, cut and split, waiting for us!!!

Three of us spent Friday tooling around the area, checking out the Sequoias, creeks and nearby small lakes while we waited for others to arrive.

    Brewer Lake

    Dinkey Creek

The creek a short hike from our base camp

Saturday's run to Bald Mountain, so nice be wheelin' in the pines and mountains.

Playing on some obstacles along the way

Not everyone has an eye for a good line

While I motored right up the same obstacle, sometimes it's me me with the bad line.

It’s beautiful ‘wheeling country up there; looks like you had a good trip! From that area North to Yosemite is my favorite area in the world (at least summer - fall!).

          Brings back memories.
Use to go to the moonlight madness runs about 10 years ago.
Also did the dusy/ershim trail 3 times.

Nice trip, saw all the rigs coming down the hill. Cool fire lookout, we've skied out there in winter. Heard all were OK and only one rollover. Saw a beat up suburban with at least 2 flats on a flatbed trailer yesterday afternoon. Thanks for sharing.

Moonlight Madness was the weekend before we arrived, lots of cairns marking the trails.

You were up there? Surely if you saw my yellow XJ you would remember that!

No one rolled in our group.

An older GMC Suburban came up to the top of Bald Mtn while we were there, he was still there when we rolled down.
I heard him cresting to the top with that big 454 ci engine of his.

Firewood - I guess they have been thinning the dead trees and are leaving all the wood for anyone to come and take or burn.
Our base camp was used as base for Moonlight Madness the week before, the fire ring was huge!

Rebel guys brought themselves and liquor, haha, some got really hammered.
We invited them to stay for our Saturday night pot luck dinner (a tradition) but only half of them stayed, the drunkest of them, lol.

You should see Remy swim in the big waves in the ocean chasing her bumper!

I think a JKU is bigger than mine, longer, wider and heavier, there was at least one JKU on our run, but as usual my little "BLKDAWG" XJ got it done.

Not on your guys' trip, but was there getting firewood (lodgepole) Sun at Tamarack, and live down the hill a ways from Shaver. Heard the roll report via a HAM (amatuer radio) guy who I assume was there.
