It's not too late for Yosemite. You just have to act like a Scout and be prepared. It'll be cold, maybe wet, so gear up. I've been in the park in every month of the year, in every kind of weather. The good thing about inclement weather, is it keeps folks at bay. Going to Yellowstone at that time, could be hit or miss. You might end up driving in bad weather all the way, or not. PAX

Yellowstone is neat see old faithful and the big lodge there. Also bring bathing suits/or not and try the merge hot dip where boiling river meets cold spring and pick a spot that suits your temp...

              Too young a crowd?

As others have said October is late in the season, but the lack of crowds will greatly enhance the experience. Just be prepared for colder weather - certainly below freezing at night. At that time of year I might lean to staying in a hotel vs. camping unless your kids are comfortable camping in colder weather

I wouldn't worry about tourist traps in West Yellowstone etc being closed. You're there to see the park, not buy T- shirts. Enough will be open both in and out of the park.

A week is definitely not too long, especially if you are driving since that's 4 days round trip right there. If you are willing and able to get off the pavement there is enough to see there to last at least a month. If you stay on or near the pavement it will take you 4 days +/- to see the major attractions.

I would rather go in October than anytime from June through August. The summer crowds ruin the experience IMO.

I thought the only restrictions on camping in soft sided tents was that you can't keep any food in them, but I could be wrong. I'm sure their website lists any restrictions.

bring good sleeping bags. It's snowing today and will be in the 20's. Then again, in 2 weeks it could be super sunny and nice. Prepare for any conditions.

My neighbor just got back from Yellowstone two weeks ago and said they saw no animals. Just too many tourists.
                        October could be very cold.
Be sure to travel the Beartooth Highway. That's probably the best scenery over there, in my opinion. And that goes out of the park, out toward Red Lodge. No need to go all the way to Billings, but Red Lodge is a nice town.

The Beartooth is a must see, but it closes usually mid-October, but it could close earlier if heavy snowfall persists.
