I hope you're not spraying yourself with your secret stash of "DDT". It was never meant to be applied directly onto human skin nor clothing.
Yes DDT works great! Sadly it's been banned in the USA since the early 70's, except for certain outbreaks of the plague or malaria epidemics, as per the EPA. It kills everything in the insect world (incredibly the common house fly can quickly adapt to DDT and live through exposure, but that's another story).
DDT works excellent on mosquitos, lice, ticks, fleas, aphids, spiders, caterpillars, and bubonic plague.
You're confusing DEET with DDT, two very different chemicals, but I knew what you meant.
DEET is "okay" at repelling, but permethrin actually kills tics on contact. 

Yes indeed, permethrin is the BEST at killing ticks on contact. Also avoid sprays that contain "Picaridin," as it doesn't do squat to ticks either.
