Anyone near Murrieta and looking for a nice family day hike check out the Vernal Pools on the Santa Rosa Plateau. They are starting to dry up already but there are still a few weeks before the main pool starts to get low. A great, short hike (about 3/4 miles of relatively flat ground), no pets or bikes on this part of the preserve.
Right now the polliwogs are a main food source for snakes so if you look carefully you will see dozens of snakes swimming around looking for lunch. It's a good easy hike for kids but there are lots of rattlers so stay on the trail.
I think it's $4 per adult and $2 per kid - pay the "Iron Ranger"; better yet stop at the information center on your way out and get a membership. I think $70 covers the family for a year but not sure because my wife handles that.
There are other parts of the preserve if you want to bike or take Fido.
