Metal container for fire in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

I see on the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park website that you need a metal container to have a campfire, and wondering what I can get away with. For instance, if I have a metal container but some coal/ash spills out because of vent holes in my metal container, are the park rangers likely to crap their pants and give me a ticket? What if the fire is crackling and popping and the occasional ember flys out X number of feet? I see their concern is that the fire may scar the rocks ... or at least I think that's their problem.

if it keeps the ashes from hitting the ground you are good to go,so a solid bottom is needed.

OP and cactus tim, I'd pass on any galvanized steel bucket for burning a fire in. Please look up metal fume fever. The extreme heating of galvanized steel will emit lead, zinc oxides, hexavalent chromium and a few other nasty chemicals. Find a pure steel drum or just use a washer drum (usually coated with porcelain). Be safe and don't piss off the forestry service (they love to write tickets for anything now)

If using a washing machine drum, look for a stainless steel drum. There is not a lot of them, you may have to make friends with an appliance repair guy.

That's what I got. It's awesome. The holes on the side feed the air into the fire perfectly.

Not to mention what happens when the soldered parts let loose.

I am an appliance repair guy. We don't get near as many spin baskets as we used to. I used to get quite a few...enough to sell or give away to friends.

Many of the popular camping areas already have steel fire pits installed. I use those rather than bring extra stuff.

You can always get one of those fold up fire pits at Walmart or target if you are concerned. We took a washing machine drum and the Ranger was cool with it when they drove by.
